Okay guys, until now, I have always run the same size tires on all four corners, but now I want to go with a wide tire in the rear. Can any of you with experience tell me if an 8-inch wheel with 3-1/4 backspacing along with a 10-1/2 inch tire will fit on the back without rubbing? I'm looking at trying a 265/50R-15 which is about 10-1/2" wide and about 25-1/2" tall. I don't want to spend the money and then find out they won't work. DOes anyone here have a similar-size tire/wheel combo on their Maverick/Comet??...
I had a set of 15x8 pro stars w3-3/4 backspace.I ran a 235/70 with no problem at all.The guy I got them from had them on a mav with 265/50's and he said it was ok as long as no one was riding in the back.I didn't see them on his car, maybe alittle rollof the fenderwell lip would have cured it(he said when it hit it was the outside). The 3-3/4 backspace seemed to center the wheel in the wheelwell real good,I had good clearance between the leafsprings as well as the outer fender.Might want to try a 255/60 on an 8" rim instead of the 50 series, the sidewalls won't "pooch" out as much.
In my experience, I think it will slightly stick outside the wheel opening. That is not a real tall tire, and I remember you stating with the new leafsprings you gained some additional ride height? I have found that a 10" tire is getting to the limits on keeping from rubbing. Just my experience. Dan
Yeah, I'm running new 4-leaf springs and the ride height increased just slightly, not a whole lot. As for the height of the tire, it's actually no taller than the 235/60-14s I'm currently running (25-1/2"). I have tried 245 60/15s back there (3-3/4 backspace) with no problem at all. The 265/50s are almost 1 inch wider and the 8-inch wheels would push them out 1/2-inch toward the wheel opening. Sounds like it won't work. Thanks for your input...
i just started running the m/t et street drag radials. i think i have about 3 1/2" backspacing. tires are 265/50/15. my opinion is that if you use them on the street they will hit the fenderwells when going over the bumps. i'm gonna push the fenderwells out a little and see if that helps.
I'm running 265/50/15's on my car. The wheels are 8 inch with 4.5 inch backspace. They fit perfect. About a half inch clearence between the tire and the leafspring and no problem with the wheel well lip. I would say that it is about the widest tire you can get under the car without raising it or modifying the wheel well. This is what it looks like.http://www.maverickcometclub.org/2004roundup/DCP_3779.jpg
A 4.5-inch backspace would rub the leaf-springs and the inner frame rail on my car...even with a 235 tire width. I am running the stock 8-inch axel housing, which isn't very wide...
I run a G60/15 McCreary cheater slicks on mine with a 4.25 backspace mag steel wheel. Plenty of room under the fender well. Sidewall to sidewall is about 10 1/2" to 11". Hope this helps.
So I wonder how the heck they get those super wide tires to fit on those cars that you see in the magazines like Car Craft, Hot Rod, & PHR (?). I see Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Barracudas, and other '60s-''70s era cars with anywhere from 265 to 305 tires on 17 & 18 inch wheels. I think it looks awesome but it doesn't look like it can be done on a stock body/chassis Maverick...
I seen a mav in hot rod once, they used a fox t-bird axle w/17x8 or 9? cobra r wheels.the wider axle and shallow face rim looked good on it.I think the article said he used a pretty good sized spacer to use them up front(1",1-1/2"?)but the front suspension was stock mav disc brakes and all.I'm still stuck in the 70's anyway, still think 14" aluminum slots look good(got 2 sets horded back-4 14x6,2-14x7 & 2-14x8..the 8's & 6's are all the same brand(U.S. Mag).Maybe someday I'll get around to putting them on something.
