[IMG] I have NEVER hear of a Ford transmission being referred to as a "rock crusher". Only the Muncie M-22. What am I missing here? Am I just too young to have heard the Toploaders called rock crushers? School me old people :D

    PS, Im referring to this

PPS, What is the going rate on a decent Toploader? If theyre all this dang expensive, I may as well buy a Tremec.

I too have heard of the m-22 as the "rockcrusher" but I've also heard it used for other synchro-less manual transmission, key being the synchro-less.

To me it's always meant a Muncie - first heard and started using the term in the late '60's I think. Never heard a Ford anything called a "rock crusher"

Muncie M22 Rock Crushers. Saw um in vettes and the like. Yes toploaders are expensive, worth it too. I see them going for $750. + and mostly much +. Rock crushers were syncronized transmissions. I think maybe some confusion with crash boxes, which are not syncronized hence the name crash box. With crash boxes you need to double clutch or use no clutch at all and do heel toe shifting. My Model A has a crash box.

I have never heard of toploaders called rock crushers. Only them "c" word trans. Anyway I've seen toploaders go for around $500 for a nice one. I bought a rebuilt one from a semi-local speed shop guy for $550. If your anywhere near MD, I can put you in touch with the guy. He's one of these old timers thats forgotten more than I ever knew. He's always at Ford Carlisle. Personally, my Sprint is probably the last toploader car I will ever own. I'm going with T5s or Tremics or some other type of overdrive manual transmission in all my future projects. The Sprint is just the car I had when I was a teen and now its the way I wanted it when I was a teen.

Oh, that toploader on ebay is probably worth everybit of what he's asking because of it being the big spline model.

I paid $700 for mine and it was a low mileage rebuild and that included the Hurst shifter and linkage. Remember a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, linkage and install kit is around $250 alone ...

I paid $345 for my Hurst shifter and installation kit (new) so I have just under $900 in my set up. Worth every penny in my book. When it came to the shifter install kit, there was a cheaper one with Hurst name on it, but I believe it was more like a universal type. Not sure it really would have mattered and would have saved me over $100, but good or bad, I usually buy the best when I can afford it.

I paid $150.00 for my toploader and a hurst shifter way back in 1976. People thought I was nuts for spending that much money. It was used of course and freshly out of a completely wiped out totalled 1967 Shelby.
