    Hey guys,

I won't lie. I'm a Mopar guy so I don't even know if the question I'm about to ask will even make sense.

Anyway, on my Dart, the front bumper attatches through 4 bolts to 2 big shock absorbers that bolt onto the front frame. Now, I assume that most domestic cars built after '73 or so have this setup since I remember some regulations stating that all cars had to withstand 5mph collisions or osmething like that.

My friend and I are going to go pick up a '76 Comet about 300 miles away and need to tow it back because it has no plates or insurance and we don't want to get busted because here in Ontario driving like that would be a HUGE fine if you get caught. So he's giong to buy a universal tow bar and we're going to tow it with my van. The two mounting points on the tow bar (on the towed car end of it) have to be 24" apart. Basically what I was thinking is we get a big steel tube (like 2x3" with a 1/8" wall), take the front bumper off, bolt this tube to the front of the bumper shock absorbers, and drill holes in the appropriate spot to put the mounting brackets for the tow bar on it. We don't want to do this 300 miles away, so I was hoping one of you guys could tell us:

How far apart are the holes that the bumper mounts to on the shocks, center to center? I want to ahve this thing ready to go so we can just pop 4 bolts off, toss the bumper in my van, bolt this bar on, and go.

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam

Just a few things to think about, most tow bars I have seen have a chain clamp on type bracket that fits on most bumpers. No need to remove the bumper at all. 300 miles is a long haul on a tow bar and rigging tail lights and stop lights is another issue. Also if the car is an automatic, the drive shaft must be removed so the trans will not be damaged. Can you not rent or borrow a tow dolly or even a trailer, for a day? This would make the trip more safe and enjoyable for all, also saves a lot of work making the temporary bumper. JMO
