View Full Version : Wish me luck
Grabber5.0 2005-05-04, 16:21 Heading to the drag strip tonight with the Mav. Since the last time I was out I've installed my MSD 6AL, new(rebuilt)Ford distributor, and gone to 3.40 gears from 3.0. Still have the peg legger but I'll have to try not to spin the tire too bad. After the big smokey burnout of course. :evilsmile
Good Luck, Matt. Those 3.40s should do quite well...
Country Mav 2005-05-04, 23:40 Sorry I didn't see this post sooner Matt!! I wished you luck beforehand and laughed with you afterward........does this count?? :D Preston
Mavaholic 2005-05-05, 04:18 Good luck, what were your times before?
Grabber5.0 2005-05-05, 09:18 Um, well, didn't exactly have a successful night. I blew something up on my first run. The car launched awesome and felt great, then BOOM! Fortunately it was the fire extinguisher and not the motor or tranny! It came loose from its home and hit the floor where it raises up in front of the back seat and completely discharged inside the car, with the windows up. http://mmb.fordmaverick.com/midwest/icons/biggrin.gif I spent probably an hour cleaning up the inside of the car so it would be tolerable on the way home, and by the time I was done the staging lanes were packed, so I said 'screw it' and just watched the racing the rest of the night. Enjoy the video..

FYI - if you are using Internet Explorer you will have to save the videos to your hard drive then launch them with Media Player. Firefox does not have a problem with my server.
My previous times have not been very good (15.6 best) considering what the new motor should be capable of, and I was hoping to see some improvement with the MSD ignition and the new gears. I've kinda figured out the tranny enough that it should not be slowing me down anymore, it does not (well, has not yet) flare on the shift into third at full throttle at high RPM.
maverick1970 2005-05-05, 09:25 Just saw the post. That really sucks, glad to see you are alright.
You will laugh about this one day.

Sorry I meant to add that -- I was laughing about this last night. Once it was over and I knew what happened, I thought it was funny as heck! Honest, you can ask the people I went to the track with. It's just a typical example of the kind of stuff that happens to me.
I just wish someone had taken their shop vac to the track so I could have cleaned it up better, instead of having to use wet paper towels, now i've got that residue all over the place, I will be lucky to ever get it all out.
maverick1970 2005-05-05, 10:33 Call a fire restoration company and ask them how they would clean it up. I have a friend that had a garage fire that caused a fire extinguisher to blow up. His wifes car was directly across from the extinguisher with the windows down. The company cleaned up the car and you can't tell it. He wasn't home when they cleaned it up so I can't tell you what they did.
riporter 2005-05-05, 19:20 Matt I feel for ya and I'm glad you and the car are okay...but you got to admit that's a hoot.. I can just picture it...I told the wife and kids and they about fell out laughing
Your situation with the pegleg is like mine was. The more work I did to to get more power to the rear wheels the more frustrated I'd get because it wouldn't hook-up.
Dan Starnes 2005-05-05, 19:38 Matt I think you and I have the same luck. You will race another day.
Dan
Mavaholic 2005-05-06, 04:35 Thats too funny. Can you do it again at the Roundup??
Grabber5.0 2005-05-06, 10:25 Thats too funny. Can you do it again at the Roundup??
I'm thinking once is enough for me. Maybe we could get some volunteers? :D
Dan we must both be distang cousins of that Murphy fellow. :bouncy:
I can't wait to get it back on the track. I just decided to leave well enough alone and not get back out there Wed for something else to happen.
don graham 2005-05-06, 12:38 i think we need to start a thread about our goof ups at the track. we all have some.:biglaugh:
Rick Book 2005-05-06, 18:33 Too funny Matt! 'Glad you can laugh about it.
quick one: No matter how long my buddy would hold his foot to the floor, the newly installed tach would only read 3 grand. While switching wires (for the nth time), the instant he touched one wire to the other, we heard a HUGE explosion from the front of the car ...
....the front right tire blew out!
Grabber5.0 2005-05-16, 23:00 Hey hey, I finally fixed the server so it sets the media type correctly, so now the video links should work for everybody! http://maverickmatt.no-ip.com/midwest/icons/onfire.gif Ok, I'm excited even if nobody else is. http://maverickmatt.no-ip.com/midwest/icons/Tongue2.gif If it still gives you garbage, clear your browser cache, I had to do that before they would work, because the garbage was cached. http://maverickmatt.no-ip.com/midwest/icons/rolleyes.gif
Got the mess almost cleaned up... may be a while before I find all the hidden stuff. Found some tonight hiding between the upper and lower dash. :D
Grabber5.0 2005-05-16, 23:26 You know, the more I watch that video, the more I see how STUPID it was to continue rolling as far as I did. I was just so stunned, I didn't think to stop. Could have been ugly if I had gone much farther over and that little import had hit my drivers door. Since nothing bad did happen though, it's still funny as heck. :biglaugh:
yeah its amazing what runs through our heads in times like that.
Mavaholic 2005-05-17, 04:32 Wow, looked serious on the track. You gonna finish that coke?
Steve H. 2005-05-17, 11:50 That is hilarious, now that it is over and no one got hurt! I fly for a living and was flying a air ambulance flight and kicked one mounted under the seat, before the days of halon extinguishers, got real interesting in the air, I know what you were feeling.

I'd say! Wouldn't want to be flying when that happened!!
tim keck 2005-05-17, 15:06 You should drop 2-4 tenths with the new gears.Hope it works better for you but I put an MSD 6al box,MSD billet dist. & 8.8 plug wires on the old 4dr once upon a time...it ran exactly the same as it did with the stock '75 brainbox,'85 GT dist and old yellow plugwires.:16suspect At least it looked more serious under the hood.
