Hi,

I just bought a 1973 Maverick Grabber with an AM radio. The radio isn't working, or at least no sound is coming out. It could be wiring or speakers. I'd like to replace it with an original AM/FM, if I can find a good one. I might consider a modern replacement if anyone has any suggestions. How easy (or not) is it to change an AM radio to an AM/FM Stereo?

Walmart and Best Buy have some nice Pioneers with CD players for about $160...

Most of them do. Does your car have the "tray" or the glove-box lower dash piece?...

I just got a Pioneer DEH-P4700MP AM/FM/CD/WMA/MP3/XM ready head unit at Best Buys for 15 bucks cheaper then they sell the same one at Wal-Mart. It fits pretty good, but your going to have to modify your dash for a newer type of radio.

What I did was just trace the back of the radio on a piece of cardboard, then cut that out and transfer it to the metal part in the dash that the radio mounts in. Then I cut out the rough opening slightly smaller then I needed and slowly ground it bigger with a dremel tool until the radio fit snug in the dash.

The newer stuff does not fit in the same specs-meaning it is not
a bolt out swap. It is difficult to find a radio to fit the factory
radio housing.
Try www.crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com) and look for a conventional 2 knob radio/stereo.

I checked out the Crutchfield link, and they have a Sanyo two knob AM/FM Cassette with an adapter kit for installing in a 1973 Maverick. Both are only $110 together. If I can't find an original AM/FM, I'll give the Sanyo a try. Thanks for the tip.

Is real easy to install a new stereo in your maverick dashboard

If I were you I wud go for the Sanyo unless originality is ur goal. An orginal radio may not be any better than what u have and may not be stero. I don't know ur preference for music or budget but just get at least 2 spks and u shud be gud to go w/ basic setup. I've done several purchases w/ Crutchfield and their gud folks to deal w/. Not the least expensive but gud support, esp, for those not exp on installing audio equip. I like music so I just installed a pretty extensive setup.
Do urself a favor IMO and go w/ the newer audio.

I have an original 1973 Philco-Ford AM Radio that came out of a Maverick. It's in good working condition.
