    Power Steering and 2.79..Tranny

I need more POWER!!!! The next time a PT Cruiser (thay there thweety) takes me on or some "guest worker" in a Honda cuts me off, I'm gonna go postal........ sorry.... had to vent... I'm OK now.

When I replace my I6 200 with a 302, will I need power steering? I am a big strong guy and all, and nobody but me will drive this car. ( 4 door '72 Comet)
Anybody doing this ......ether way? I have not heard anybody say the bigger engine hurt the I6 200 suspension, so maybe I'll leave it alone...lowering the front is probably good aerodynamically, anyway. This is a daily driver and will never go to the track..I wonder specifically the weight difference between the 6 and the 8........
Also, after reading all the AOD nightmares, I think I will stick with my C4. Is it true that the bellhousing alone will need to be changed? The AOD "overdrive" sounded cool, but maybe with my 2.79 rear I already have it! (?)
Also, I am in California and we have a lot of straight highways and roads and the freeways out here move around 75-80(or more) so I'll keep my highway geared 2.79 8" rear end, I think! I mean, the little six can almost cut the mustard, and the 302 would certainly handle it, am I wrong? If I am missing something please tell me...

I just found all you guys (this site) and this is great. What a great resource.
wish I could post my car's pic though, it is that "Grandma Brown" color. There ain't no Comets or Mavs out here in Cali.... rare.... only lots of Dems driving expensive foreign crap......sheesh

the 2.79 should be great highway gears with the c4.
as far as the no power steering. Not sure. I do not have power on my black maverick, but I also have the pizza cutters in the front.
    why can't you post pics?

I think you have to have a certain amount of post before you can post pictures.
You can e-mail them to me if you want and I will post them for you.

I dont have power steering on mine and wouldnt anyway. I dont see any problems. IMO, Fords power steering for these cars is crap anyway. Too mushy, no road feel, and prone to leaks. Gear Vendors makes an overdrive unit that bolts on the back of your transmission but its not for the faint of wallet.

:Welcome: the 302/c-4 combo with your gears should be great.i was getting close to 20 highway in the 4 door 302 i had, it also pulled a little camper/trailer fine for my grandfather when he owned it. power steering isnt really that necessary, its not like your driving a High boy with over sized tires and manual steering(wonder why the wife hates my truck?). i drove through your area a couple of times when i lived down that way, what kind of watercraft do you have? If you dont have plans for the second weekend of June, there is a meet in Reno. you can find more on it under the club meets section.(y)

    I've had a few
Yep, just get a 250 or 302 bell housing and bolt it all together. 2.79 with the torque of a 302 will work great. My car has a 3.00 gear and with a 250 at 75-80 mph it's pushing it. Around here if your not running 85-90 on the interstate, they will flat run your ass over.

With my 250 I can usually shift into 2nd and stomp it and pull away from PT Cruisers and the like, but I guess a 200 is a little weaker.

I wouldn't bother with power steering. Extra crap to go wrong.

    Great advice....
    Revenge shall be mine!!!!
I suppose the bellhousing can be identified by the starter motor location? this ought to be fun to try and find... But then that is the fun of this..... if it were easy then everybody would be driving a Mav or a comet....uhhhh..... right?
I'm happy to hear that power steering is not needed...my E150 Van has it and it is mushy.
My water transpo is a Mariner 40' ketch sailboat... I charter it for daysails and the like, when I am not fixing boats for a living. Don't know if I'll make the Reno gathering, but it would be something to shoot for...cuz the little brown Comet loves the open road...
