Could someone show me a picture of what the inside of the dizzy looks like with pertronix installed? Do I need that little silver cylinder installed in there? If so, what does it hook up to? I am not starting with it all installed.
stock distributor (replaced two years ago) with points. I wanted to lose them and go with pertronix, but I cannot get any spark. One suggestion in the instructions was to install a resistor, but that didn't do anything either. Instructions say to remove the condenser, points, and wires. Then hook the ground wire back up, install the pertronix and gap to .030, red wire to + terminal of coil, black wire to - terminal, and go racing! Hard to race with no spark. I was wondering if the ground wire is hooked up wrong, or if I have something else out of place.
That metal cylinder you are talking about is the condenser I think. Take that out. Dumb question, but you do still have a power source going to the coil right?
I have wires going in and out, I better track them down and make sure I have a hot one on there. Same wires that were on there before the pertronix attempted-conversion, so I assumed so. I will go check though...good suggestion.
Ground wire goes on one of the screws that holds the Pertronix unit in. You may have a defective unit. No offense but Did you remove the black wire that went from the points to the negative side of the coil? Did you install the magnetic sleeve and the rotor?
I got it...Jamie's suggestion wasn't to far off, and he got me looking in the right area. I had the hot switched wire going to the negative side of the coil, and when I swapped it to the positive side, it started right up. Started much faster and smoother than ever before, also. Running beautifully now. Let it warm up and test drive it. see if I notice a difference. Thanks to all.
RUNS GREAT Idles smooth enough that I could drop the idle down to 550 from 700, and it still holds smooth. Seems to take off faster (but it could be the cold air, as we had a front come through today leaving 55 degree temps). Starts right up, no more having to pump the gas, no more turning it over for 5-10 seconds. I turn the key and it just lights right up I will try to hit the track again this weekend and see what kinds of numbers I can pull now.
Glad to hear you got it running. I agree with greasemonkey, getting rid of the points is one of the easiest and cheap things you can do to these cars to get them running 3 times better.
COOOL BEANS. glad you got it working. down to 55 degrees?? wish it would get up to that out here. its been up to the high 40s this week because its warming up here.
"Warming up" to 40s...hmmmm. I LIVE for 40s and 50s, because in a couple of weeks, we get 80s to 100s for about 6 months. I live indoors for that entire time. And, with 90 degree nights, the races suck, because cars are overheating, and just don't run good on hot air. When you come to Houston, look for me...I am the guy running around in shorts and T-shirts at 40 degrees while the Texans are wearing pants, thermal undies, and jackets.
any ideal how long these things last? I carry the old set of points and condencer in case I break down but after @ 4 years it still is working perfect
