....what in the darn heck do I do with it! I bought this Mustang II front suspension, sight-unseen, for $100. I do not intend to make the swap just yet. I'll revisit it when my 347 blows up :shudder: My current front suspension (including A-arms, springs, etc.) is all 'brand new' from PST so I don't feel any urgency right now (although I do NOT have disc brakes on it currently). I'm going to be wearing out the "SEARCH" button trying to figure out exactly how to make the swap - one day. Any quick words of advice would be appreciated.
That is a true statement. (..... now figure THAT one out ) I did a search for the swap in the Special Topics Forum. 'Jayman' states, "Having done the Mustang II conversion to the front end, take some advice and get the aftermarket kit from Rod and Custom Motorsports." My bio-rythm thingy must be at it lowest of lows. Oh well, Susan's been looking for "Yard Art".
What kind of pressure washer was that, cause I have an old 289 that needs some SERIOUS cleaning!!! Do you think your pressure washer could make it into a blown, fuel injected 418? On another note, several people on here have used stock cross members and junkyard parts. It is possible. But, you will have to invest many additional hours to modify the crossmember, add an extension to the steering rack, replace all the bushings and at least inspect the ball joints and tierod ends. The stock 9" brakes will need to be upgraded as well. They were barely adequate for the Mustang II with a 4 banger. No match for a stroked race car. Just make sure that you are comfortable welding on critical suspension parts. If you have ANY doubts as to the strength of your welds and your welding skills, get someone else to do the welding. We like having you around.
man that pressure washer rocks! can i borrow it for my house? and my boat and my camper and my truck and.........
rick, if you'll send that cleaned up one to me i'll send you another like the first picture. i'm sure it won't be any trouble for you to give it a shot of panther piss, now that you have the experience, and make it look even better.
Rick, good score. Now that you can fit a 460 in there, I will take that 347EFI off your hands for you
Scott, you're first in line to get the 347, just don't go pulling your engine anytime soon. In fact, I think I'm going to put that beaut back on the market and get a 'real' M2 front end when the time calls for it. 'Still pondering. BTW, Susan didn't fall for the "Look Honey, I bought you some Yard Art" thing.
Before it goes to market, remember, there is a guy just south of you that will help get it off your hands and haul it off.
It's just a matter of getting the cross member attached to the car. The front track is is pretty similar with the pinto and bobcat being only an inch narrower 55 1/2 vs 56 1/2 for the maverick. It's ok if your front end is more narrow than the rear, just as long as it's not the other way around or handling gets a little funny. Besides, you can fix that with different offsets for the front and back. It makes rotating the tires a pain in the ass, but GM did it on the F-bodies in the 80s so you won't be only one. The ackerman angle is wrong for those spindles on a maverick, but I've been told the steering angle at most speeds isn't enough to worry about. It'll just be a little noisy parking it on hot black top, but so is my truck so, that's not a big deal either. You dont' have to change the rack if you don't section the cross member. The instant center is pretty close too, so the handling will be there. If you're a welder and have some spare time, I think it would be worth while to do a lot of measuring and figuring, because this front end will fit, it'll just take a lot of fabricating.
