Hey Guys, I've got a chance to buy a '88 F-150 from a guy. It has the 5.0 FI engine in it with all of the accessories still on the engine. What can you tell me about the engine? Is it one of the roller cam blocks? What about the heads...are they decent? I have always wanted to put fuel injection in a Mav, and now, it looks like I may get a chance at some point. The trans also comes with the truck, so the flywheel issue shouldn't come up. I'm thinking that one of the wiring harnesses from Painless is probably the best route to go to get the EFI hooked up correctly...is this correct? What are some of the other things that I need to look for before I haul the shell to the shreader? Thanks,
I can't tell you much, but I don't think it is a roller - trucks did not get rollers until 94 or so? It probably has E7 heads, which at the time were pretty good, and when ported flow pretty decent.
you will want to grab the wiring and sensors from the truck.there are a couple threads on this conversion, do a search above.
I had a 86' with the 5.0 in it, pulled the race car with no trouble. Strong little motor. That is the motor that Neal has in his maverick now
Trucks at that time had roller blocks but with flat tappet cams installed. As mentioned, it was mid-90s when they actually put roller cams in trucks. Probably has E7 heads, better than the heads that came on our cars originally but not as good as GT40s, GT40Ps, etc. Trucks generally had lower compression and low rpm torque-type cams. I think Mustangs that year had forged pistons from the factory, not sure about trucks.
