Does anybody still have the original springs and shackles in their car? if so can you shoot me a sideways pic of the leaf spring shackle,. "with car as normal on ground".......................... with my new springs the shackles look like they sit too far back...thanks :tiphat:

I don't still have the original springs on the car but can help you with understanding where the shackle should sit.

The range of motion of the spring (from fully extended to fully compressed) should not cause the shackle/spring end to touch the frame rail. When the shocks are not connected to the spring plate, jack up one side of the rear to full compression. (I usually do this on a lift so I can tie the frame down. This more closely resembles the car coming down off of a bump with a load. This would cause the spring to compress more than just the static weight of the car would.) Check for interference between the shackle/spring end and the frame. If there is no interference, there will be no problem from a functional standpoint. The shocks would reach full compression and bottom out before the spring would be able to compress this much.

A spring that was made slightly longer than is correct but with the correct arch and ride height could cause the shackle to angle back and still function correctly as long as the spring end never contacts the frame rail.

Now all that being said, most of my cars have the shackle very close to vertical. The only car where it is angled towards the back has worn out springs that have lost most of their arch.

If these are original springs, they are probably shot.

the ones on my 70 and 72 are backwards quite a bit. maybe the other one on my 71 is too but when i was looking at it it was up in the air. might be the same way now that it's on the ground. it's in the trailer right now. sounds to me like yours are right. :)
