 on the 74, the column mount gear selectorcan be bumped into rev easily. (son found out while vehicle running and rearranged our cyclone fence gate...oh well-first of many?) and the shifter is very loose. Is this just the linkage worn at the connectors, or is this another problem? The tranny shifts well, and do not have any problems while driving, other than having to be very careful and make sure that the gear selected is the gear wanted. The column lever is loose and drops almost to the next gear on the selector indicator, yet not in the tranny. Also, thanx for tips on shocks.:D

One possibility is the shift tube is worn out. Kinda unusual for a low milage car like yours but anything's possible. These are not reproduced so you'll have to find a better one and swap it out. Another is the shift collar worn out. This is where the shift lever mounts to the collar. Again, its a hunt for a better one. It could also be a combination of both. A third possibility is the nylon bushings are shot where the shift linkage mounts to the shifting arm at the base of the steerring column and down at the transmission. These bushings are still available from Ford.

on my mav, the bushings are so worn at the arm to the tranny near the steering gear that that link falls out, and I can't shift.

gotta stop and put it back on..careful, or you may lose the link and be shiftless. If that happens, you can shift it with your arm down near the steering gear, but make sure the ebrake is ON HARD!
