Well, I could have really gotten hurt today, seeing as the spring decided to shoot out of the crappy compressors and into the wall, I was out of the way thank god. So, will the compressor that goes through the center of the spring work?

I've had the same thing happen to me before, and like you I also thanked the good Lord for not letting me get hurt. If you are putting in the front coil springs on a standard Mav or Comet, I used one that I got on a loaner program from Auto Zone and it came out (with some work) through the shock hole and it was the kind that went in the center.

    Hope this helps.

You should also use a heavy chain to fasten the spring to the control arm or frame. Then if the compressor breaks or lets loose the spring won't go anywhere.

yeah with a little work you can get hte inside coil compressor in though the shock hole. I point the nut down and tighten it with a wrench through the coils. If you can cut a compressor short enough you can point the nut up and tighten it with a ratchet from the top.
