what are the widest tires you guys would put on the back of your maverick. I am getting ready to buy new tires for mine and I want something wide.
i have 275/60/15. i did have to roll the fender lip to get clearance. most say 255 is the biggest with no mods.
Tire fitment has as much to do with rim width and backspace as it does tire width. There are guys here running: 275/50 275/60 255/60 In 15x7 and 15x8 rims. If you put a 275 on a 10" wide rim, you will likely have trouble. Or if you use an 8" wide rim with only 3.5" backspace. It all has to do with where your rim locates the tire in relation to your body panels. A 15x7 rim with 4" backspace will be the tightest possible package IMO.
Hey, I just noticed your post says you are buying "tires"... Implying you already have rims... In fairness, if you already have the rims you are using, you should tell us the diameter x width & backspace. Also, if the fronts and rears are same, or give us the different specs.
with the 14 inch rim a 245/60-14 will fit nice on there, no issues with clearance or messing up the speedometer.
I am running 245x60R15's on 15x8 Cragar S/S rims in the rear. I had 275x60's on the same rims and they would not even come close to fitting, tire was hitting the inner wheel well on the car before the rim would seat against the drum/hub. The 245's barely cleared the e-brake cable bracket on my leaf springs, I flipped the bracket and moved the cable further under the car, now I could easily fit 255x60's under it with no clearance issues. Oh, the tires are BF Goodrich Radial TA's. Front setup is same rims, just skinnier, 15x6's with 215x70's BFG Radial TA's. I was running 15x4's with 165x75 (or was that 85's), but I found that a bit scary when I had to stop real hard, front end got a bit squirrelly, but it sure steered easier (manual steering). Another thing, I do not know what the backspacing is on either my front or rear rims, but if you need to know, I can measure it and post. rk
