Ok! Here is the deal... My electrical problems seem to have been solved thanks to you guys, just a couple of minor problems with the dash lights, but I couldn´t care less right now... Starts nice, cranks lovely, but when I give it some throttle it dies, If i creep around going 40-60 km/h (don´t now in miles/h) and give it just a little gas it runs, the choke plate have to be closed, in other case it dies almost on the spot, when It shifts up to maybe 3 or 4 gear and I give it some gas it dies directly and completly, starts again if I just crank it in park/neutral, but the further I go more gas I give it dies again and again... So please, I´m starting to give up on myself, do I need a new carb and /or fulepump or have you got any tricks, or how do I find out if something needs replacement, I´m so tired of this, if it was just up and running so I could attend other stuff... This needs to be my daily driver car... Maybe my brain needs replacing... Cheers!!!
Oh don't give up! You've got it narrowed down to a carb problem now. You are in the home stretch! Anyway, I would purchase an inexpensive carb rebuild kit and go through it. The most important part of the whole kit will be the adjustment proceedures that you will find in the instructions. This will give you how far the choke needs to close and any other settings. Also if it's sat for any length of time you could have some crud blocking some of your passageways. Maybe even a bad diaphram in the accelerator pump. Anyhow, don't give up! YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!!!
If it runs fine with the choke closed but not with it open,It may be a vacuum leak at the carburetor base gasket.Or a bad accelerator pump.Try this:with the car running at idle with the choke closed, spray some water from a squirt bottle at the base of the carb where it meets the intake manifold(you could use starting fluid also 'either')but water wont burst into flame if you have a leakey plug wire.If the engine hiccups(stumbles) when you spray the carb base the gasket is bad between it and the manifold. If you get no response from the engine after trying this the base gasket is probably good.Step2:With the car not running pump the throttle(from under the hood) a few times while looking down the into the carb. You are looking to see if gas is squirting into the carb while you pump the throttle. You should see a steady shot of fuel when you pump the throttle. If you dont the accelerator pump is not supplying fuel when you step on the gas causing the car to stumble and or stall. Now the pump could be bad OR in need of adjustment.Follow the little rods attached to the throttle. One should be for the choke butterfly and the other should be attached to a stamped steel arm,(I am going on memory here its been a long time since I have dealt with one of those carbs)This is the actuator for the accelerator pump. Some have several holes in them for the rod some require you to simply bend the rod to take up slack and actuate the pump.If it has holes in it you need to move the rod to another hole.(usually the farther out the hole the longer the pump stroke)Pick a hole that will do this for you and check again to see if you are gettig a shot of gas. Also it may be necessary to run the car for a minute to fill the float bowl back up so the pump well actually has gas to squirt. If the accelerator pump still refuses to work, the piston may be dried out/cracked causing it not to work.At this point it will be necessary to take the carb apart. If so buy a rebuild kit for the carburetor,(Befor you take it apart)It probably could use a rebuild anyways.Carbs can be tricky no matter how simple they are,If you dont feel confident rebuilding it yourself find someone who is good at it and have them rebuild it for you.Step3: If the carbs accelerator pump is working fine(squirts fuel) The problem could be due to a lean mixture.I will go through this stuff step by step with you if you dont mind day by day correspondence.Try the proceedures I have given you so far and let me know what you find.Dont get discouraged or give up you can do this! There are plenty of people here who will help you out(Vast pool of knowledge here)Remember "man created machines not the other way around" so dont let it beat you its just a machine.Good luck
Brilliant and easy to understand, you don´t know how much this means, but guess what... Looked at some pictures and compared it to my carb, my carb is missing pieces, the whole back of it is missing and the choke is a "homemade" kind of thing that looks very very strange, but anyways I´m gong down now to try out what you wrote here (better print it out, bad memory),and I´ll post later tonight what happened, I´ll take a couple of snapshots while I´m at it so you can see for yourself what I´m talking about. Thank you again and again....
Tried everything... And I broke down, gave up and towed it to the shop, feel kind of lame, but he told me he will run some compression tests on the cylinder, a great guy really licensed from Ford USA, and he was actually glad to see such a nice car, told me he would go over it for free and then tell me what to do, so all I can do now is wait... But thanks everyone!
No shame in that. There has been several times that I was tempted to do the same. Don't always have the time and money to keep screwing around with something forever and hitting a dead end time after time.
Yup,happens to the best of us.Many times a different perspective is all you need.Sounds like a great guy whos willing to help you out.Just remember"its a machine" most of all have fun with it,even when it gives you a hard time.Stop and laugh"this could only happen to me"Good luck,it will all work out.Chin up and all that rot
