ok so i hooked up a tach in my car... i couldnt hook the cd player and the tach up to the same fuse so it could come on when i turn the car on.. so i just have my tach hooked up to the bottom far left fuse and now my brake lights work 25% of the time and my dome light doesnt work.. help please!!
Dont hook the tach there, disconnect it and see if everything goes back to normal.Sounds like you upset some old wireing.
ok i got the tach and cd player hooked up to the same fuse (i blew it and didnt check it) so now the tach works and cd player and dome light.. now ive diagnosed the problem of the brakes as probably wiring cause sometimes they'll come on once, especially if i push the brake fast a couple times.. so i dont know...
so me and my dad checked it out and we think its the switch by the brake that makes the lights come on. has anyone had problems with this?
Yes thats the switch.I have not had a problem with mine. Its original. But just because mine is still working dont help you.Check the wireing to it,look for chafeing/worn insulation causing a short/loose connection at the switch.Prove out the wireing befor you condemn the switch. If it all checks good, then yeah time for a new switch.Good luck
Your CD player is supposed to connect to the radio fuse. The illumination for the tach is supposed to connect to the dash lights fuse. Pretty simple stuff...
I have had problems with the brake lights in the '72 several times in the past couple of years. First time, they would come on and go off randomly, even when the car was sitting parked and no one was in it. The brakelight switch was the problem. I replaced the brake light switch, and shortly after, the brake lights quit working all together. Seems 35 years of the brake light switch wires flexing everytime the brakes were hit caused the wires to become brittle. I guess unplugging them and moving them around when I replaced the switch didn't help any, and they broke loose from the connector shortly after. I cut the wires off up at the harness, then soldered some new wire on to extend it back down to the brake light switch, and crimped a couple of the female spade connectors on to replace the original connector. That was about 18,000 miles ago, no problems with the brake lights since.
I got it at Advance Auto Parts. GP Sorensen brand, part number SLS73. I think it costed like 7 bucks.
Wow $18? I know for a fact I didn't give more then 10 bucks for mine. Almost positive it was 7 bucks and some change. It's been about 9 months ago.
i finally got out and took out my tray so i could look up under there better and the brakelight switch doesnt look like anything i see in my car. any tips as to where exactly it is and what it takes to get it out jamie? thanks http://www.partsamerica.com/productdetail.aspx?MfrCode=GPS&MfrPartNumber=SLS73&PartType=422&PTSet=A is this what you were talking about?^
You're right, I don't care at all. Go figgure it out yourself, like I had to do! Sheesh! Just kidding, of course. Your link is correct, that is the switch. Follow the brake pedal up under the dash, you will see it. To remove, pull the pin out (my pin is not the original type, just something I found laying around that worked). You then slide the swtich (and brake pedal rod) just enough off the pedal so the outside of the switch clears the end of the pedal. Then rotate the swtich down and back, the other side of the swtich is made like a hook sort of, and will come off without sliding the brake pedal rod all the way off.
