 Help.....I have had this problem since I brought the car home and now the wife said it gets fixed or else. The gear selector (auto on the column) does NOT lock in park. The linkage is tight all the way to the tranny and the grommets are good. I was told there is a plastic "dog" in the column that holds the shifter in place. Has anyone ever replaced, worked on, have any idea what I am trying to say??? The reason this is urgent....son cranked car to go to school and left it idling in yard to warm up...daughter went outside and saw car creeeeeeping across yard in reverse w/out driver... needless to say, excitement for the morning. Thanks for everything in advance.
PS also, called Ford dealership here, UHHH...what you talking 'bout...plus, they told me their part books don't go back to '74. ????????? anyways.....thanx
I thought... ... that there was a tab that locked the shift lever. Try this. When you have the car in park, you should have to pull the shifter towards you, while sitting in the driver's seat, in order to go to a moving gear or neutral. Is the shifter spring loaded? I used to drive a chevrolet truck that the spring loaded part of the shifter broke and it would shift straight up and down. I wasn't the one who fixed it, so I am not sure where that spring loaded assembly is. I would guess that it is in the steering column. Perhaps you spring is broken or it may have disconnected. Seth
spring? LRToy, sitting in drivers seat, just tap on the top of shifter handle and , if running, the shifter drops into reverse. (if not running, hard to tell if gears engage) Also, in order to crank car, must reach left arm over steering wheel and hold shifter up in order to engage the little switch in the column that lets the car crank.(it has a name, i think "neutral safety switch") Thanx, Robert:confused:
