There's been alot of talk about headers recently. Specifically the Hooker 6208 headers that are made for 64-70 Mustangs/Cougars with a 351W engine swap. It has been proven that these headers will work on a 302 in a maverick/comet but several modifications are needed to make them work due to the reduced deck height of the 302 when compared to the 351W. It has been asked whether or not these will work on a 351W in a Maverick or Comet, well, I havent' tried it but I think it will work!! After some long hours of debating I think it is possible to "make" these headers work on a 351W in a mav/comet. The spacer flange will not be needed on a windsor so they brings the headers closer to the block/head but since the deck height is taller it gets the tubes off of the motor mounts, so no motor mount modifications would be necessary. I think that if you move the engine back approximately 1" - 1 1/2" it will not be necessary to notch the shock towers AT ALL. That's right, if you move the engine back a little the # 1 and #2 primaries, as well as the #5 and #6 primary tubes will fit within the factory "grooves" on the shock towers and should not interfere with the upper control arm mounting bolts. Now, this doesn't mean there will not be other modifications necessary, the firewall will need a good size dent on each side to clearance for the engine coming back but other then that I think it would be somewhat simple install. Also, i'm not saying that you couldn't do it without moving the engine back but I think that would be the easiest way!! Well, there's my thoughts, what does everyone else think??
I think you are right ! Based on everything I `ve heard and seen about the 6208`s ,It makes sense to me that they would work with a 351w Mav/Comet set up with very little trouble. I want to put a 393/408w in my Mav next year ,and I`ll be running my Victor jr. heads on it. The only thing is, I plan to cut my towers before I do the swap. Anyway I want to go with a set of 6208`s when I do all of this . I intend to document the whole thing on my site when the time comes.
I also plan to change to the 6802 headers this off season, I feel the 1 1/2 tubes are holding back my 408. After having a professional do a 3 stage port job I found almost no improvement in flow because of the small header tube. 1 7/8 tubes are the only way a strong motor can breath. I have already made the shock tower mods and I'm not sure about moving my motor back, I'll install the headers just the way they are. M.A.V. I'll send you my pix's so you can include them with yours if you like. Terry Gates AKA Bossmav
I too plan on changing headers this winter. My car is NOT doing what I figured it would and I think that the "bigger" headers is what I need to get the car where I want it. Thanks to Jim(purple70) and Mr. Moore for working out all the bugs so it will be alot easier for those of us that do it in the future.
