I have a 74 grabber and want to do away with the big bumpers. I have 73 rear bumper brackets on the way. I know I have to modify the car, I also know there is a size difference in 69.5-72 rear brackets and 73 brackets. am I making the right choice for my 74?. Please feel free to let me know if I should alter a 74 all #'s matching V8 grabber. Thanks Ken
No, leave it alone!! Once I'm finished with my 73, I'm going to start on my 74 Grabber, and it'll be big bumpers , I like them. If your not building a 1/4 race car, why take them off?? It's the way it was built, and they look right at home on a mid 70's car, plus if someone ever hits you (God forbid) I think you'd be glad you had them !!
Dave, Thanks for your input. So here's one more ? I have dark green and white paint , factory colors I'm thinking grabber blue. Would you change color or stay paint code correct. I am not a fan of green. To be honest I have not seen the green in good shape to have a true opinion. Ken
#1 question....have you seen Daves car? #2 you are asking the wrong guy about color... do what you like.... ...Frank...:Handshake
Mine is a dark emerald green with the white on the bottom. some one that posts on this site has the same car as mine as a picture in his profile. wheels almost off the ground. That car is why I'm rethinking my ideas. I was going to build a what ford should have built theme car. Like the roadrunner or king cobra, I'm thinking of a 1974 snake of a different color. From the pink panther show, there was a snake called Blue Racer. He's the fastests snake in the world, But not the brightest.google pink panther cartoon and click on Blueracer. You will see the humor in my thinking.
Build it the way you want it. I'd go with early bumper brackets instead of the 73. I got a bunch of them. Email directly (See below) if interested.
The general consensus (except for a select few) is that the big are bad very, very, very, bad....I can say that "It's the way it was built" but it is not what Ford wanted it to be, because the cars were originally built with the small bumpers, that is the way they were originally designed. Ford, along with all the other auto manufacturers, was forced to put big bumpers on their cars to meet a safety mandate.... Green is cool, but I think you will find alot of people here that really like blue...I know there is even atleast one pink one in the gallery..It all comes down to do what you want. If you find yourself looking at the car and saying yeah the big bumpers look ok but the small bumpers look really good you probably want to go that route no matter what everyone else says. It is easier to do it when you are rebuilding the whole car instead of as an afterthought.
I have the stuff to swap my '75 to small bumpers but will probably not do it right now. Why?Because it's still a beater/driver and those big "ugly" bumpers do offer some protection in daily driving. The '73 style is a nice compromise between looks/protection,although the rear is still pretty much useless as far as protection. If I decide to later make it "nice" or turn it into a drag car then the small bumpers will be put on.JMO
