71-73 Mustang shifters have a body that is about an inch wider than Pinto/Mav/Mustang II. There is an extra area that is about the same size as the gear indicator, but it is on the right side of the stick. The P/M/M II shifters did not have that, just a gear indicator and the slot for the stick.

If the hole in your tranny tunnel is too wide, is it possible that someone swapped in the wider Mustang shifter at some time?

If you would have said "woodgrain", I could have told you Mustang II ...

What is different about the size? ... and how much?

Also, I would be interested in pics of the shifter hump. Kurt, I know you don't have a camera. Anyone got one posted? ... I'll do a search.

I mounted mine right to the tunnel when I changed over to a floor shifter. Mine came out of a Pinto.
