View Full Version : Timeline of my '71 2dr
mean_maverick 2009-03-15, 21:31 Bought this from a fellow forum member in Memphis, TN. my brother and i loaded up the deisel and drove 9 hours to get there, load it up, and drove 9 hours back home. a saturday well spent IMO. bought it for $200 and spent $300 in deisel fuel.
here's how it sat when i arrived to pick it up:

mean_maverick 2009-03-15, 21:37 got it home and started on it that week. started with some of the brake work, to get it rolling around and more importantly, to get ti stopping good :yup: added some disc brakes up front, and all new brakes/hardware all the way around.
here it is on the trailer once we got back home after our 17 hour drive :drive:....

mean_maverick 2009-03-15, 21:42 after some thought about rebuilding the original engine, i said to hell with it and dropped in a '90 5.0 HO engine that i had in a parts car.
here's a shot of the original engine...

and the 5.0 once i got everything swapped to it and dropped in...

drove it around for a couple of months after putting the engine in. ran great. started right up every morning and used it for a daily driver for a little more than 2 months. while i was driving it, i managed to pick up a NICE grabber hood from a good friend here on the forum ;)

mean_maverick 2009-03-15, 21:48 finally built up some extra cash and decided to lay down some paint on it. at first, i couldnt decide what color to paint it but after some debate... what better color than the original Grabber Blue. once my Marti report came back and i found out it had a factory painted top instead of vinyl, i had to throw that in there for something that would stand out but yet would be original.
here's some snap shots of bodywork, prep and paint. Dupont paint was used and the color matched great! it's '71 color code: J for Grabber Blue and color code: M for Wimbledon White for the top.

and the final result...

a special thanks to a friend who painted the car. my brother and i have both worked for him in the past so i helped him with the body work and prep and he sprayed it for me for $1500. it's not perfect but i believe i got my money's worth
mean_maverick 2009-03-15, 21:51 more updates later once i finish it's current transformation :thumbs2:
Grabber-1 2009-03-16, 12:40 Nice. It's great to see something all the way throughfrom start to finish....And it loks really really nice...didn't know about the painted roof thing...what does that look like on the buck/door tag???
Robb
white trash 2009-03-16, 13:14 Was that a factory trailer hitch on it when you bought it? Still have it? Wanna donate it? :)

it'll have a two digit color code on the door tag instead of just one. instead of it normally reading color code: J, it will read color code: JM
mean_maverick 2009-03-16, 13:23 Was that a factory trailer hitch on it when you bought it? Still have it? Wanna donate it? :)
wasnt factory. someone installed it yrs ago. it was welded solid to the frame rails. if i still had it, id send it to ya but when we took it off when it was painted, i pitched it in the scrap pile :o
white trash 2009-03-16, 14:20 No sweat. I am planning on finding all the factory options and accessories I can find for my car. Regardless of how strange they are. I would never tow with my Maverick, but the factory hitches are out there. I just got a booklet of all options and accessories off ebay and I think it would be kind of fun to collect them all if I can. A factory AM/FM radio is ridiculously priced for a 1970 but I may one day even buy one of those. Don't ask me why. Just for a hobby I guess. It beats drinking and gambling by a mile.;)
mean_maverick 2009-03-16, 15:12 here's you a FACTORY '70 Maverick hitch that's NOS..... enjoy! ;)

Matterick 2009-03-16, 16:39 nice timeline! and i love the paint on this Maverick! :2thumbs: :yup:
Very cool. Incredible taste in color.:2thumbs:
Its funny looking at project pics. It doesnt do justice to the actual amount of time and work involved. Great job!!!!
Jamie Miles 2009-03-18, 20:37 That is just awesome. I remember when this car was for sale, and I briefly thought about picking it up because it was so cheap, but it was just too far of a drive for me at the time. I'm glad it went to a great home!
Joe Dirt 2009-03-18, 20:38 Love it!!!!
mean_maverick 2009-03-18, 23:10 thanks guys. once i get my current upgrade completed, ill post some more transformation pics
mean_maverick 2009-04-12, 13:58 well, here's some new pictures of some of the stuff i have been waiting to put on my car. i installed a fresh '94 5.0 HO engine that i had, first ran it with fuel injection then decided to go to carb. i also upgraded to a reverse rotation water pump, serp belt, underdrive pullies, my 3G alternator, Crane 7.2 ratio roller rockers, aluminum radiator and electric fan, and the rest of the goodies that were already on my car.
i also installed a nice 'driver' quality rear bumper and done the H4 headlight upgrade. below is some pictures....

very cool!! You got a T5 in there right?
mean_maverick 2009-04-12, 18:41 yup, put it in last year :yup:
very nice. im fuel injection conversion fan (althought i havent done it to mine yet due to cost) why did you pull yours?
mean_maverick 2009-04-12, 20:43 very nice. im fuel injection conversion fan (althought i havent done it to mine yet due to cost) why did you pull yours?
well it started better, idled smoother and everything but in the end.... it just felt like it was holding something back. swapped it back to carb and it almosted seemed like a night and day difference to me. im still a fan of fuel injection, just not for this car ;)
mean_maverick 2009-06-08, 21:13 installed a new "jack instructions" sticker, and prepped then painted the entire trunk with trunk speckle paint. everything looks alot nicer :yup:
next project for the trunk:
-hide-away compartments for the sides
-custom flooring with carpet
-custom built speaker box and stereo system install
