used to do a 302 swap? Or are there different items used when dropping a 289 in the engine bay of a Maverick?

    Same stuff...but is it a pre 65 289 or post 65 ? pre 65 had a 5 bolt bell housing pattern.66 and later had a 6 bolt pattern.

I'd definitely make sure he has $1K of parts. I don't like to reuse starters and alternators. I bought a 302 motor complete for $50, so they are out there. You just need to look. Just because he has a lot of parts doesn't mean they are all good. Good luck/Just be wary. :)

Well, I have actually found other ones. there are some that I may actually look into instead due to them being closer.

Also, I think he meant he has $1000 worth of parts all over the place and not just the motor.

I bet that block is 5-bolt ... you probably don't want that ...

ok so I'm going to be on the lookout for a 6 bolt pattern. Remind me again, what is everything I would need to ask for if I end up going this route?

Best option is to get a late 80's / early 90's 5.0 Roller engine ... convert to carb and mechanical fuel pump and you are good to go ...

I assume you already have the necessary Maverick conversion parts ??? Harness, throttle linkage, motor mounts, etc. ???

Watch out not only for the bellhousing pattern, but also:

    Water pump
289s inlet from the passenger side

    Pulleys/Balancer
289s used 3 bolt crank pulleys... Not a problem if you get EVERYTHING matching, either 3 bolt stuff or 4 bolt stuff.

    Engine mounts/frame stands
If you are replacing a 302 with a 289 and have the stock mounts/stands, then just use those. If you are replacing an I6 with a 289 that includes engine mounts and iron frame stands, you can use those. Otherwise, get the 302 Mav stuff.

Of course the stock Mav manifolds are needed.

Everything else can be pretty much either/or.

Negative. This idea just came up all of a sudden. I have found someone who has said he recently pulled his 289 from his 67 mustang and has every item. But if I need other items that are Mav specific guess I'll just have to research what those items will be. Thanks for all theinfo so far btw.

I have seen the 66-70 Mustang frame stands used, but the engine mount portion MUST be Maverick specific. Advance has them for under 15 bux each though. It's the frame stands that are difficult.

Let me guess though... "every item" doesn't include the frame stands?

Just emailed one of the people I'm talking to and hopefully I'll get an answer tomorrow. However, I did a Ford 289 search in nyc and some other places and I'm finding a lot of them around actually. Including people selling off pieces, not from the actual block, but things that need to be used for mounting. I just need to get a list together of what I need and I'm sure I can work around it.

Why not look for a 302 if you don't have the engine yet. More common, should be easier to find. Even more cubic inches to start with.

    Ditto

It's one thing to go through all of this if you MUST start with a 289...
