i hate electrical crap but here we go... 1991 302 h.o. mustang motor.. tfi distributor motorcraft on it.. need to put one for our cars in it... can someone actually tell me which one to get or will anything work.. my plan is to head down to napa with the tfi and explain the situation to the guy and see what he says.. were the 80s models different?? should i get an 80s model one??? suppost to have a huge cam in it:16suspect
what exactly are you trying to do? switching an HO block to carb? iirc, you need an old distributor and put a different gear on the shaft. the problem arises because ho blocks from 85 on used a roller camshaft which needs a different gear. also, diameter of the shafts should be different so you can't just use the gear from the ho distributor.
the h.o. is carborated but he had it in a late 80s truck and never changed the distributor so... i need a distributor that will hook up to the car...
why doesn't the one in the block fit your car? is it a duraspark distributor and you don't have the rest of the ignition setup? maybe you should post some pictures of what you have
All you need is a distributor for an 85 Mustang-302 HO with manual transmission. It will be a duraspark with the steel cam gear. Reman units sell for about $60 with a core to exchange. This was the only application with Duraspark and the steel cam gear.
The EFI-- TFI distributor doesn't work without a computer to adjust the timing. It will fire, but the timing advance doesn't function without the computer's input.
i hope this helps because napa didnt... they said i would need a mustang wiring harness if the gear is the same on the distributor as a 70s model.. can i use it...
+1 and the distributor gear is different for the 5.0 from the 70's distributor you need either a steel or bronze gear because of the roller cam the cast iron gears just get torn up...or is it the other way around and they tear up the cam...:16suspect (the 85 HO distributor should just plug into a factory duraspark unit if you have one... There no special Mustang wiring involved just a factory duraspark wiring. When you talk to the guys at the parts store remember this you dont have to know anything about cars to work there you only have to be able to look stuff up on the computer. So take some of the things they say with a grain of salt. (no offense to anyone who works for autozone or anything))
The gear on the TFI unit has a larger diameter hole thru the middle as the TFI shaft is larger than the 70's unit.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Mallory/650/7870406/10002/-1 went to jeggs because a local auto parts dealer suggested it.. put in 1991 ford mustang v8 302 can this work???? or does it have to be for a roller cam period
That's a TFI distributor. Same thing you have now. The ONLY application with what you need is the 85 Mustang 5.0 HO with manual transmission. This is the ONLY Duraspark distributor with a steel cam gear that needs no computer.
so as it sounds is that it WILL plug right in to the set up i have now and i dont have to do any splicing
If your car came with Duraspark, it should plug right in. My 77 was a 6 to 8 conversion(by a previous owner) and it doesn't look like anything was spliced in. When I transplanted my roller 331 in, I went down to Advance Auto Parts and ordered a reman 85 Mustang 302 HO distributor (w/manual trans) and it plugged right in.
