I have a 72 comet with a 200 cu in engine. I can currently get it started but it won't stay running. When I try to turn it over again it sounds like the battery is dead....it in fact is..But I have had the alternator tested and it shows that it working.. :hmmm: What else could it be? Also I took the wiring harness off the alternator and I am replacing a couple wires in hopes of that helping!
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Do you have to boost it to get it started? Have you had the battery tested?
Do you have fuel to the carb? spark?

Okay the battery is perfectly fine. I replaced some wiring from the alternator. The car now fires up and the battery staying charged is no longer the problem. Now when I get it started it will stay running until I hit the gas, even when the choke is off. Then it just dies. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the carb???? Fuel isn't getting to it or too much I'm not sure...I'm going around in circles!

    Check your timing.

is the idle really rough? I would definitely check the timing. If the carb is the problem then it can cause the engine to die when you accelerate. I had this problem with my 200 and I don't exactly now remember what it was but I tinkered with it and I got it fixed. I'm sure someone else here will know . . .
