I am trying to find a cheap or used looser converter to free me up to the 3000 rpm range, but am failing miserably. Best price on new is around $200, which really isn't too bad. A bunch of guys on a local mustang forum are pointing me toward shops that "loosen" a converter. Is this safe? Feasible? Cost effective?
YEs most can be loosened up just acall a reputable converter place or the manufacturer. I had tci do one for me once.
the cost of shipping both ways plus the cost of doing the job will be more than buying a new one...JMO ...Frank...
There are two places local, so no shipping. Mustang forum says I might get 2400 out of it max. I want closer to 3000, so if I can't get what I want from having it loosened, I will just buy a new one.
Since we are on the topic, and you guys know my engine better than anyone else, what advertised stall would I need to purchase to get between 3000-3500 on my setup? For example, I see TCI Streetfighter listed at the jegs site with "280-300 duration cam, 3.55-4.66 gear, rough idle, large fuel system, raised compression, 3000-3400 stall on small block" How close will I get to that. This is the range I would like to fall into but not sure if all my specs line up correctly. My specs are below, and I would guess that 1 mile per gallon when I stomp it is "large fuel system". Compression is around 9.5:1, which I wouldn't necessarily call "raised"...
A tci wont even get close. I had one with a similar setup even after they loosen it up it wouldn't do that, id say the only way for sure is to order one for your setup.
Email Redneck Performance your specifications, they set me up with a C4 loaded with a 9 inch 4k stall converter. I'm on my second season with no issues. http://redneck-performance.com/index.cfm
Not to change subject, but i was looking at a valvebody from them are they pretty good? Full manual reverse btw.
Daaco makes a good converter for the money. Got 6 years(street driving/bracket racing) out of mine before it went bad.
I bought a 9 inch 3,500 stall converter from Redneck a couple years ago, spent several hours trying to install it and tranny it would get so close and not allaow bellhousing to pull completely to motor, yeah I know you are thinking I didnt have converter seated in tranny---wrong I finally talked to to the person that rebuilt my tranny and he talked me into sending converter to a converter shop. They cut it open and discovered that the stacked height of the components in the converter were the wrong height and it would not matter what I did it would have never fit. They said the converter had nice quality stuff inside it though. I spoke with Redneck about it and they wanted me to ship the converter back to them but I was down to crunch time so I just took care of matters myself. As with everyone that sells stuff you see good and bad about them on the internet, I am not bad mouthing them just telling my experience. If I was in Texas and looking to get a good converter I would get one from BroaderPerformance, yeah they are $500.00 but are guarenteed for a year and one free stall conversion
