View Full Version : My 71 Build.
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 20:07 Well i bought a 71 in arkansas a couple months ago.. It was a parts car then it was a project car then a parts car again and now its for sure a fixer upper. It needs cowl and floor pan work(of course) a new quarter panel and fender. I got the fender yesterday. Right now we are converting it to 5 lug its 5 lug drum up front now but will be disk brakes one day soon. It came factory with a 250 six cylinder we are pulling that cleaning engine bay and painting. Gonna put a 302 in it with rear gears.Interior was red and black bucket seats. Gonna keep that just repaint and cover everything. And it will be there soon. We are gonna take off all emblems keep them guessing and patch all trim holes and emblem holes.
Pictures as of now.. Project was 5 lug up front next is 5 lug in the back. Then floor pans and cowl and engine bay. Then disk brakes and primer. THen paint. We got somebody gonna do the seats for free because he owes us a favor.
Im looking for cheap disk brakes. I have a decent spoiler and sport mirrors and door panels to trade for some.
If you have anything rude to say just leave.
mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 20:10 glad to see you fixing this one up :Handshake
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 20:15 glad to see you fixing this one up :Handshake
I really like the color combo and the longer it sat in the drive way the longer it grew on me.. We just bought a ldo 302 car that has all the parts we need to convert.
maverick maniac 2009-08-30, 20:18 glad to see you fixing this one up :Handshake
yes I am glad to hope everything goes well should be a beast with that
motor in it . you run a c/4 with some 325 gears you will smoke most mustangs you meet on the road :Handshake
disc brakes are HARD to find take it from me i buy and sell a lot of them
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 20:25 How much do you charge for yours? A junkyard near me has alot of late model mavericks but they dont allow you in and they say all the disk brakes are gone.
maverick maniac 2009-08-30, 20:31 200.00 plus shipping but let me know if you want ,, if not they will be on e-bay for 300.00 cleaned and painted

mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 20:45 for $200, they're non-cleaned/non-painted
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 20:47 Alright... will you trade decent spoiler, sport mirrors, and deluxe door panels?
maverick maniac 2009-08-30, 20:53 Alright... will you trade decent spoiler, sport mirrors, and deluxe door panels.

mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 21:03 yeah, i cant keep them either. may have a set at the end of the week but they'll be the same price (if i part the car out )
Joe Dirt 2009-08-30, 21:14 I cant wait to see how it progresses
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 21:39 Pulling engine tommorrow. Painting engine bay gloss black. Painting the engine FORD red and putting a 3 speed over drive behind it.
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 22:15 Okay guys that know alot about motors and transmissions. This is supposed to be a pretty strong 302 with dome pistons open chamber heads and big cam. I want a c4 behind it i heard i need a stall is this true and why do i need one? What happens if you dont have one?
mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 22:18 if it's a decent engine, you'll need a stall. otherwise it wont idle in gear and when u go to take off, it'll fall on it's face and/or die.
and semi-gloss black will look better in the engine bay. just something to think about....

Is their a rattle can i could buy that would hold up really good and look like it was done right? And well i need a stall i guess what size should i look for? I have a 88 engine and a 71 transmission.. I also need other parts to make those two fit together what are those?

rustoleom professional in the tall boy cans
mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 22:30 you can use about any rattle can paint and make it look good. the key to a good paint job is prep. wire brush and then sand every inch of your engine bay. after the wirse brush for removing grime, i start with 80 grit, then 120, then 200. sand everything that you want to look nice. once ur done, clean with some laquer thinner, allow to dry and spray away. when youre dont painting it, you'll be glad you took the extra time to do it right ;)
as for the stall size, you're gonna need to know alot more about your engine's specs (mainly the cam specs). you need to know what rpm range your cam works best in, and what rpm range that you're gonna be doing most of your driving in.
you're also gonna need an aftermarket 50 oz 157 tooth flywheel, which will use a 10.5" bolt pattern circle for the torque converter....
Positively Ralf 2009-08-30, 22:44 Maybe this is the wrong topic to ask this but I'm just very curious. This is aimed at the topic creator but why does it seem like nowadays all your topics have some warning of "if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything" or something close to that?
I occasionally pass by here when I have a problem and never really pay mind on what the hot topic is but this one just caught my attention cause like I said, I noticed some of your threads have something like that added at the end.

Because i dont always get along with everybody on the board and i dont want my project thread turning into a thread about mine and somebodies problems or etc.
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 22:53 Hey dave will this work?
"2800 STALL CONVERTER FOR A FORD SMALL BLOCK (289,302,351W) SMALL BELLHOUSING C4 TRANSMISSION. USES 168 TOOTH FLEXPLATE. GOOD WORKING CONDITION!!!"
Its cheap and local.
mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 23:37 wont work, you gotta use one for a 157 tooth flywheel with a 10.5" bolt circle...
1973Maverick357 2009-08-30, 23:42 wont work, you gotta use one for a 157 tooth flywheel with a 10.5" bolt circle...
Alright im gonna call the guy 2morrow that had the motor and trade some stuff for his c4 and stall.
mean_maverick 2009-08-30, 23:47 that counds like your best bet, just make sure he was running a 157 tooth bellhousing/flywheel..... or if he was running that trans/stall with your engine then try to get the flywheel too that way u know everything works together :yup:

Have you been to the one going to Jonesborough saw it when I came back from the crossville fleamarket a couple years ago.
Robert
Cool man! Glad to see it's not getting parted!
1973Maverick357 2009-08-31, 21:21 Gonna attempt all the engine bay finishing up this weekend. Can the cowl repair be done in a weekend?
Can the cowl repair be done in a weekend?
How bad is it? if your going to weld it up, and do it properly, it's going to take some time.
Joe Dirt 2009-08-31, 21:56 Gonna attempt all the engine bay finishing up this weekend. Can the cowl repair be done in a weekend?
depends on how bad it is,how you decide to fix it etc
maverick maniac 2009-08-31, 22:03 just was wondering how much of this work are you doing yourself ?
1973Maverick357 2009-08-31, 22:05 just was wondering how much of this work are you doing yourself ?
I like to do work or atleast give commands :D
No but i have to do alot of the work and they do all the real hard work like pulling the motor but i will be cleaning up the engine bay myself.
maverick maniac 2009-08-31, 22:11 being that you are a young man I hope you take the time to learn as much as you can

Yeah im also taking automotive class right now in school and plan to go into automotive as a career.
On the project note: Got the V8 Frame Stands and Belly Bar off my parts car they are being powdercoated this week. I will post pictures once they are none but no progress yet.
maverick maniac 2009-08-31, 22:21 just be aware that things grow when you powder coat ,but that is a very tough
finish . i learned everything i know about mavericks from dismantling lots of them and
Dave and Craig would probably say the same ..
1973Maverick357 2009-08-31, 22:23 For the cowls would these work for the maverick??

yup, it's a great way to learn the in's and out's of our cars. doing and/or helping do the work yourself will yield you experience and knowledge of what you're doing and more knowledge of your car.
but back on the cowl subject, it's gonna take a few days. to do it right, remove the top portion of the cowl and repair it that way. search the internet for mustang write-ups on cowl repair, it's the same basic procedure for our cars :yup:

if your's arent extremely bad like most, then that may work. check your's and go from there...
1973Maverick357 2009-09-01, 16:27 We cut the cowl off with a grinder the top part and looked inside on my parts car and see where it leaks at it doesnt look like a very big deal.
mean_maverick 2009-09-01, 16:50 here's some food for thought on how to fix it "correctly"
http://www.mustangmonthly.com/projectbuild/mump_0103_mustang_cowl_repair/index.html
1973Maverick357 2009-09-01, 17:08 Well the way we are fixing it will be just as good and will only take an hour or two :D The redneck way lol

We cut the cowl off with a grinder the top part and looked inside on my parts car and see where it leaks at it doesnt look like a very big deal.
I always wondered if it could be fixed from underneath - if you had the dash out. That may save time depending on how you want to fix it.
1973Maverick357 2009-09-03, 18:09 Progress. Pictures: Not completely finished but still working on it. Just so you all know my car came factory with black engine bay.

1973Maverick357 2009-09-06, 22:15 No thats just the picture they showed on ebay. i want the car to look original not just flat sheet medal and i know its been done before i will take alot of pictures once we start on them.
I can't wait to see how they look, they are nothing like Maverick floor pans . Plus they have those big holes for the seat mounts.
1973Maverick357 2009-09-06, 22:30 I can't wait to see how they look, they are nothing like Maverick floor pans . Plus they have those big holes for the seat mounts.
I dont need the middle section and they arent to far off nobody will ever be able to tell.
Um, I think the Mustang pans have a deep pocket where the seats bolt in - our Mavericks don't have that deep pocket.
Just something to look at when you get them and your seats out. You may have to add some spacers for the seat rails to si on.
