So long story short... My front drums are 10" diameter but the shoes that fit the backplate are 9". wheel cylinder that fits is also for a 9". It's like someone took the brakes from a 3.3L mav and put them on my 4.1L car but re-used the same drum.. At this point I'm thinking that my rear axle was changed out with one from a 3.3L mav too, but that just seems so extreme. I feel like there should be a problem with using 9" shoes with a 10" drum. Seemed to work before tho...
9" shoes wont work on a 10" drum. are you measuring the inside diameter of the drum? the rear brakes only differed on the v8 cars from the i6 cars.
yea, I measured the inside diameter. I'm starting to think that the computers at these auto parts stores are wrong and that I have 9" brakes on a 250 I6 mav. Maybe someone replaced the drums at some point and the parts store gave them the wrong ones...? It just doesn't make sense that the rear brake hose that fits my car is from what the parts store lists as a hose for a 3.3L mav. The reason the 4.1L rear hose listed doesn't fit is because the hole for the bolt that goes into my axle is too small. I double someone changed my whole rear axle if the changed the brakes to a 3.3L mav brakes. Did the 71 maverick (not grabber) with the 4.1L I6 come from the factory with 9" drum brakes? The parts stores say that it came with 10" drums like the 302's brakes...
well shiznit. I'm an idiot. nevermind about the 10" drum things. Measured it like 4 times thinking it was ten inches. Walked into the garage today and realized I had been starting at the 1" mark on the tape. They are 9" drums. wow. I feel dumb. Still don't know why carquest and advanced computers are a mix n match of the right and wrong brake parts for my car but I guess that's how it goes. I need to start drinking some coffee before doing this stuff. sorry guys.
Measure twice...buy once...I allways start one inch in on a tape measure but...I figure it into what I am doing.Get some really good strong coffee
i used to work at a autoparts store. the older the car the worse the parts listings were for them. then ocasionly some parts would be miss boxed. on that brake line thing, i suspect that the hole being to small was a manifacturing error. all the rear brake line bolts ive done on 8"s and 9"s are always the same size. when i get one that is to small it just gets drilled out to the right size. glad your geting this sorted out.
yea. I used to build log cabins for a living when I was in college. Really good with a tape. Always start at the one inch when it won't lay flush. Don't know what I was thinking. done with one sides of the brakes, re-assembling the others after this cig. geez. that was confusing me so badly too. I couldn't figure it out lol.
