    Just bought my first Maverick

Awesome car so far but having some issues.

It runs rough, acts like its not getting enough fuel. Uncle said its more than likely the carb needs adjusting in one way or another.

    Car is a 1976
    2dr sedan
    250

what do I do to get it running smooth and make it stop dying? Where do I start?

    I will get pics later.

Check for vacuume leaks first. Then adjust the carb. Check the fuel filter. If its got alot of gunk in it it may need a rebuild.

Do a tune up to the ignition system first. New plugs, wires, rotor, cap and if by chance it's got a points ignition system, replace it with an electronic system. If it's got a Duraspark, could be the spark box acting up too. Or the wrong coil for the system.

Good point, but i think it should have duraspark on it. Either way, plugs and wires and cap and rotor wouldnt hurt.

You dont rebuild fuel filters...You replace them. You can use water/carb cleaner to spray down all the vacuum hoses and the carburetor base(where it mounts to the intake) If the Idle drops while spraying a particular area/hose you have found the source of a vacuum leak.Dont use starting fluid to do this...It is incredibly flammable and if you have leaky plug wires you will find them real quick while looking for your eyebrows...arm hair or hair on your head...Good luck!!!

Sorry, i meant to rebuild the carb if the filter has alot of gunk in it. Id start by inspecting the carb to see if i saw any lines loose or off any ports first. I also have saw a few of those carbs get loose from its base too. Then spray it with carb or brake cleaner. Avoid the plug wires if possible.
