we put a late 80's 5.0 in my sons maverick. After it sits for a day or 2 it has no oil pressure on start up for about 10 seconds then comes up to normal. any ideas?
Did you have to change the oil pan? If so did you use the oil pickup tube to that oil pan? I had the same problem after I put a later engine in my friends earlier pickup. The oil pickup tube sat higher up than the original and won`t prime as fast. Also,if you did change the pan and pickup the pickup MUST be sealed to the oil pump,or it will not prime correctly. Also if you didn`t change the oil pan the oil pump pickup screen could be clogged up. I hope this helps, cause I can`t think of anything else that hasn`t been covered already.
i'm using a FL1 Motorcraft filter and i put in a new oil pump and pick up tube.It does act like all the oil is draining back into the pan. i used a pan off of an early 302.
You need to use the oil sump pickup for the old pan you used. Not that a rear sump pick up would fit.Oil pump may be loose or bearings are loose causing oil to drain off em. This isnt unusual with high mileage engines. Its probably tired...
opps, forgot to say that it was a rebuilt long block from an engine shop. blew up the old motor so had to get another one.The pick-up tube is about 1/2 inch from the pan. I put clay on the tube and test fit the pan. thats why I am so confused about what the problem might be.
Back to loose pump or loose bearing clearances. Not unusual for people to do a "budget" rebuild and just throw bearings in it if the crank looks good.
How cold is it where you are right now??? Thicker oil takes a bit to get everywhere...Lifters are the second last thing to get fed in a ford smallblock...
If you had the engine rebuilt,,, I would be talking to him. May be worth a try an try a new oil filter,,, could've got a bad one.
Did you remove the clay??? Sorry couldnt resist. Did you try another filter on the off chance its bad??
I hope for his sake it is a filter. I dont see how though, these filters dont bleed off oil due to the way they are situated. They dont hold pressure after shut down either, but if the check valve in it is stuck open,I suppose it could take longer to get pressure built to the point that it shows on the guage... Past experience tells me he has loose main bearings though, or blockage in the lifter gallery... OP switch/guage is fed directly off the main oil gallery from the pump to the mains soo...Oil is bleeding off the mains and out of the crank journals. It all has to fill back up/circulate before pressure builds in the gallery to trip the guage.(not to mention get to the top end)If he is running heavy valve springs...The spring pressures could pump down a few of the lifters as it sits for a day or three, causing the noise too. Lifters dont usually pump down though unless they are weak or have big spring pressures working on em when they are idle.Could be a crappy guage/sender too...
thanks for all the ideas. I am going to pull the motor to repaint the engine bay so i will pull the pan off and check a few things well i am at it.
