Will a starter that fits a small bell housing c4 fit a big bell c4. I have a new starter on my car and want to reuse it when I swap the 351w in since money is tight

It should fit both bells.... BUT you may end up with one of "Ford's better ideas" and end up needing a shim or a "short throw" starter.

BTW with the large bell you HAVE to use the 164 tooth flex plate.

I know that it uses a 164 tooth flexplate. Hopefully it will work. Ifd it needs a shim that it fine by me. what is a short throw starter. I have never heard of that before

    I hadn't either until I bolted a 164 tooth flywheel and 11" clutch to my 351W.
The ring gear is only 3/8" in from the starter mountin surface. I researched until I found a starter That matched the flywheel.

the c4 and flexplate I am planning on using is from a 75 elite. I thought about usin the starter that came with it but that car set for 15 years probaly so I figure its past its prime. I bought a reman starter for a 302 when I put the 302 in my car. I really hate changing starters with headers on these cars

You'll have a little more room if you use one of the later hi torque starters. :)

Yep, sure will. I got mine at pull a part for $15, it came off a 90's T Bird with a V6. LOTS of room, even pretty easy to put in the top bolt!

You said it Don, I learned the hard way last week and pretty much had to take mine apart to get it out. The old starter and compression didn't mix to well. It only cranked my new motor about a dozen times before it died. As you mentioned, I got the newer permanent magnet gear reduction starter from Autozone for a 2000 Mustang. (lifetime warranty)

what is the compression ratio on your car. My 351w should be around 9.5-10-1
