I am doing a 3G upgrade. I am considering putting a 150amp fuse between the alt and the battery side of the starter solenoid. The folks I got the unit from say's I don't need one. I think I wud feel more at ease w/ a fuse in the circuit. I don't know if the original 63 amp unit has any protection cuz I have'nt check the wiring closely. I want some opinions on this modification.
Not only is it there to protect your equipment, it's there to prevent a fire. Fusible link or a Fuse should always be used. It's not a matter of will it work or not, it's a matter of safety. You also need to make sure your output wire can handle the load. It should be at least 4ga, if not 2ga for 130a. That is also dependent on the length of the wire though. EDIT: http://www.alternatorparts.com/wire_size_chart.htm
Thanks for ur thoughts. They're in line to what I had in mind. I have some quality 4 gauge wire left over from stero amp install I will use for the short run of abt 3ft. or what ever the length of the fac cable from alt to solenoid.
Marine supply stores usually carry waterproof things like that for boats. Maybe TractorSupply if you have one of those stores around. Other than that if you do a web search for 180a circuit breaker you'll come across some places.
Same one I bought. Alternator is 130A, breaker is 150. $35 or so at Autozone. Going to mount mine on the battery box where I can trip it or reset it easily.
150 amp Breaker Thanks for info on the breaker. I will ck my AZ and pick up one. I also want the 150amp breaker. What gauge wire u going w/ to trunk? Everybody is advising me to use some kind of breaker and Im going w/ their advice. Thanks Guys
The one from AZ is just in the fuse section near all the light bulbs and wiring stuff. I bought 6 gauge wire for routing to the trunk. Hope it is big enough... I have 8 gauge running back there now for the old alternator, but fear it is too small for the 130A alternator.
It is. For that run and 130amps I wud use no less the 4 gauge. Six gauge might suffice but IMO it's on the border. I found the 150amp breaker at my local Auto Zone now all I have to do is figure out where Im going to mount it.
Thanks for the link Jeff. I am impressed w/ the links you post here that eliminate all the guessing, possible mis-information, arguing and so on. JMO
