Well, like the thread says lately my 250 has been a little more hard starting than normal and doesn't want to idle very well. I had always just chalked it up to needing electronic ignition but it's been brought up to me that the float in my carburetor could be bad. This would make sense to me because my mpg has gotten noticeably crappier and every once and awhile I smell gas from inside the car. how could I check the float and could I fix it myself possibly? Also the car's valve cover is soon to be replaced as it is leaking in 2 spots. (Not badly, just noticeably) I mention this because I had at first thought the problem was that the wire to the coil had oil on it or something, but I cleaned it and there's been no difference. Any advice?

is there any way I can check without doing the whole test light between the cap and the ground thing? Mine's an A/C cr and the alternator is in a really pita place.

Take the air cleaner off when the car is dead cold.
Look at the choke butterfly - if it isn't closed open the throttle once to see if it closes then.
Put the air cleaner back on and drive it for 15 - 20 minutes around the block. Take the air cleaner off again and see if the choke is completely open. If it is then your choke is working.
To solve your starting and running problem you might set the point dwell (or gap the points to .017") and reset your timing. (when you change the point gap you change the timming)

I'll get right on it. Thanks again, Paul.
