I expect the answer is on here somewhere but 15 minutes of searching hasn't found it. Can someone tell me where the ignition resistor wire is? Is it in the under-hood wiring harness? Under dash? Thanks.

it's in the dash harness, medium green, with thick and soft insulation as the wire is very thin. it's also clearly marked as 'do not cut or splice'...

The whole wire is resistive..from the switch out.

Just in case, a Pertronix (1) will operate at less than 8 Volts...which is what you'll get at the coil on a stock Maverick....

HEI, not Petronix. Think the HEI dist needs full 12V.

The Ford shop manual instructions for replacing the resistor wire are confusing with contradictory info. It says the wire is R/LG in one place in R/LB in another. Tody has it as medium green with thick, soft insulation. There's a yellow (maybe used to be med green?) wire with thick, soft insulation, but that has a "fusible link" tag. Guess I should pull the ignition sw and replace whatever wire is there with one that runs all the way to the distributor. I hate to cut anything till I'm not SURE my HEI dist is good. Maybe I'll wait till the engine is ready to run and test the dist with a hot wire. Decisions, decisions ... Didn't accomplish much today.

There are other, switched 12v sources, off the engine harness, that will work. I had tried mine 2 different ways, when my engine wasn't running well.

That was my first thought but wasn't sure where I'd find an under-hood power source that is switched with ignition. Maybe one of the alternator wires? Maybe a lead for a cruise control box, assuming that was an option in '72. Where did you find a switched source?

Oh, yeah. I also need ignition-on power for the electric choke on my Holley. Maybe I should make a relayed circuit for ignition and choke. Don't know how much current either draws. Too many questions. Maybe things will be clearer in the morning. :hmmm: Think I need to sleep on it.

I am seeing the same thing w/ R/LG and R/LB on my ClassicCarWiring color chart. I want to use a 12V sw/source under the hood to turn the new elec fan setup I did over the week end. For the last few days I have had it hooked to battery it runs until eng temp comes down to 175 deg. whether the engine is running or not.
I tested the RED/LG wire at the voltage reg and it was a little short of 12v-it has a small amt of resistance. I won't need the volt reg anymore; installing a 3G alt and hope to use that feed for fan.
Anyway, the only solid med green wire I see on my 1973 chart, runs frm stop light sw to dir signal connector.

My wiring is all apart so I can't test anything with a meter. Is one of the voltage regulator terminals switched with ignition?

    Yes. The I terminal.
I tested it today and it was a little short of 12 volts. It's 11 point something; I don't really recall. I will test it agn tommorrow and give u exact number. I just took my shower and thru for the night.
I hope to use it to my fan relay.

    Thanks. That should work.

Do you intend to use a relay for your fan. I believe OEMs are normally wired with a relay. 11V should switch a relay just fine.

I'll still sleep on it but a relay off the voltage regulator to switch my ignition and choke sounds good right now. (I'm assuming the Holley elect choke wants 12V.)

I will have to also do my elec choke according to my diagram the choke is powered frm the S terminal on the voltage regulator. I will most likely power my choke (Holley 600) frm the fan relay. I have Jeg's relay kit 190 on - 175 off.
