View Full Version : My 71 Maverick Grabber
Hi, my name is Don. I am new to the Maverick owners. I have always like them and now finally get to own one. I pick the car up from a posting on craigslist. I was able to drive it home because we had a break in the winter weather on New Years eve. The motor had been rebuilt but the paint was bad and the front seat where a bit beat up. We went through and made a list of changes and parts I need. I got the money for my parts by selling my tunner. My parts came yesterday and today from summit($1300 worth). I will have pics up soon. I cant wait until spring. We are going on the Power Tour and going up to the Frankenmuth auto fest.
You are also in luck. The Maverick Comet Club International, Inc. (MCCI) will be holding their 18th Annual Roundup Nationals in Dearborn, Michigan next July 20-24. You will see lots and lots of Mavericks and Comets. You will have to plan and attend. More details can be found at www.MaverickCometClub.org (http://www.maverickcometclub.org/)
:Welcome:to the forum Don

Welome to the board.:Welcome:
Welcome ! And I'm glad to see that you have returned from the DarkSide of the tuners and back into the light of American/Canadian Steel :thumbs2:
Where did you buy the car from??
Welcome aboard! :Handshake
Thanks every one and I like your comment Recrdholdr, very true. haha. and i bought the car in Charlotte MI, he said it was from Virginia. He didnt think it was a true Grabber because it was a six cyl and had drum breaks. I check the door tag and vin and its an original Grabber.

Everybody knows Grabbers came with the Boss302, close ratio 4speed, and 9" rear. Lol :)

Looks like it's a nice little car, What did you have to give for it if you don't mind me asking??
I paid $3500 for it, the paint looks better then what it really is. But beside that I really like it. Thanks
With alittle bit of work, Looks like it would be a nice cruiser.
I should be pulling the motor out soon. Going to change the color to the dark Ford blue. Also got some parts to switch out. Valve covers, air cleaner, ignition kit, electric fan, new Auto Meter gauges, shifter, and some other things.
Just got the car back over to the pole barn. I also got a few more parts, a voodoo cam and lifters, a front and rear sway bar kit, 3.55 gear, and some paint. Waiting to see what torque converter I need.
Got the motor and trans pulled out of the car this weekend. Looks like I be rebuliding the trans, just a little to sparkle in the pan. Also started stripping the paint in the engine bay, got the voo doo cam in, and thats about it so far. O also got another parts list going. cant wait to have this done.
Nice looking ride. Welcome.
Here are some pics of my progress:
got the paint on the motor stripped and repainted ford drk blue. I will post some pics today.

Welcome from Virginia
Okay, this is what i have got done so for: motor and trans pulled out, motor and engine bay striped and repainted, put new oil pan-cam-valve springs-valve covers-distributor-disty hold down-harmonic balancer-and painted ford dark blue on the motor. In the engine bay its got a new ignition box, coil,16" electric fan, trans cooler, battery cables, master cylinder cover, cleaned and painted hood hinges, horn, and shock tower braces and painted the engine bay with extreme chassis black from eastwood. I also have installed a bigger front sway bar and also a rear sway bar. Also got the headers sand blasted and sprayed with vht black paint. Still to go is get my pulleys and intake back from power coating and reassemble the motor, replace the battery tray, rebuild the transmission, paint and body work, front bucket seats reupholstered, and replace the trunk drop downs. There is probably more i have done and still have to do but thats all i can think of at the moment. Thanks for looking.

Nice job on the engine bay, Looks sharp and clean.
I got the motor back in this weekend. Just got to button some things up and then moving on to putting the trans back together.
What a great time this have been getting my mav done. Here is what i went threw. lifter tick would not go away so i bought another set of lifters. Still did it with the new ones. So we did some grinding and bingo there goes the lifter tick. one problem down. Next was the trans. Got it tore apart and rebulit. put it in the car no thrid. toke out the vavle boby, cleand things up some more put it back in. still know thrid. tore out the trans we had put one part in backwards in the trans. haha nice. looked at the vavle body again and this time things where jammed in good. so replaced it with my sister vavle body from her 68 mustang that we are restoring. now trans works great. another problem down. Now lets move on to the oil pressure. I had 5 lbs. took out the oil pump and it was all tore up. so we took the chance and just replaced the pump. Drove it 15 miles and spun a bearing. took the motor back out. The crank was all scratch to crap, all the bearings where shot. but the pistons, rods and walls where still really good. got all that replaced and the motor back in. And now it is running great can wait to go on the power tour. We are picking it up in Indy.
