I have a 1970 ford maverick, just got my carburator all done and it purs like a kitty. On to the steering column and its problems. When the battery is connected the power is active to the entire car, no matter what position the key is in. I have to bump the cilynoid to start it and push the air flap down on the carb to stop it. I was told the ignition rod is stuck in the on posistion. And my colum shift lever basically free slides to whatever gear.
I was wondering if someone could post a image or link to a diagram showing these area's and mabye what I need to replace it. :) an aprox price mabye if your that good :D
Or someone in my area could swing by sometime and take a look. I live near escondido :D

is the transmission an automatic? if so something in the transmission has sliped/broken.

sounds like the ignition switch is stuck in the ON position and the rod is probably disconnected from the transmission manual lever or lower column lever. Is anything visibly tampered with or loose on the upper portion of the column?

I see you are also looking to buy an entire column. I would look and make sure what is wrong with yours before you go and buy aniother column. It could be an easy fix.
