You know this board has so many talented people in so many different fields, you have people that build engines, people that paint and do great body work, people that do interior work, fabrication of parts, I mean you can find someone in this forum that can do anything you would ever want to do to a Maverick, and that brings me to this thought, there are enough people on here with just about everything (collectively) needed to build a car, the talent to do whatever needs doing, the board should put all of it's resources together, and build a Maverick, sell it on Barrett Jackson or other, and let Stefan take the proceeds from the sale and donate to a worthy cause, you know do like a gathering type of thing and have it all lined up so those with the skills in their field can attend and do what they are best at, I know I have parts I will never use, and I'm sure others do also, we could give up those parts for the build (I would be glad too) and that way everyone could have a hand in the car getting done, I know it sounds silly to some of you and it would be hard to get it together with a central location and someone to oversee the build and take the lead on keeping the car build going but what a Maverick it would be when done! Ok shutting up now and getting back to that bottle of Crown.........
I was thinking along the same lines not even 72 hours ago, but in a more practical fashion, such as maybe creating a "Maverick/Comet Monthly" Magazine sharing the experience and skills of those stated above. And I was only sipping grape juice...
Well Spring Break has started down here and I had four or five hundred tanked up college students in the bar last night, I have to have a little drink or two to keep me from throwing them into the Gulf of Mexico and holding them under, j/k not really, just woke up with this strange thought in my head and when I read a post about powder coating in here I thought wow there is some talent in this forum and you know, there is lots!!!! And there is another idea you have there! that mag. would be cool also.
I like this idea. Need 1. A large empty Building. Anyone know of one in the midwest? Perhaps a small factory that went under. Any empty barns?
Takes a lot to put out a monthly magazine. Hard to get people to write up anything even for a newsletter. The MCG puts out a 20 page Quarterly newsletter. I have to look everywhere I can for enough info to put into it.
When I was with the SCCA/San Francisco Region, I used to right an article once a month. It did take some thought, but I was limited to one page (don't remember how many words), but that is the easy part............it's publishing the magazine that really takes the time along with some resources........although doing it on line would take a little less resources........but the time is considerable................IMHO
What if you were to mix tech information with owners/photographs? Who they are, what they do, what/who influenced them and why they chose Mavericks/Comets? I would think that there are a LOT of interesting individuals on this site that if you provided a question format for them to complete along with a telephone number for details to finish the composition? I don't know, just pitching ideas to see if there are any hits to enhance the MCG?
I like this idea. Sounds like a mmb.maverick.to club car build. I like it because: . It would be a joint project for all mmb members. . If it were sold on some big public way it would promote Mavericks and Comets. . It could generate a LOT of money for some worthy cause. . It could be a fun project for the participants. Central location would be nice but, given this is an international group, it might be more realistic to look for a cluster of interested MMBers. Maybe Georgia, Kentucky, Texas, Arizona, ... Would have to think about ownership of asset(s). Car would have to be titled and there would have to be a plan to dispose of the valuable parts if it didn't get completed. (Is mmb.maverick.to incorporated?) Best chance of it happening will be if someone with space and tools volunteers to lead the effort and do a lot of the work. Some method of accounting would be necessary. To be reasonable, the leader(s) should have a LOT of authority to decide what, where, when, how and who. It would be too frustrating to have to have to constantly convince people and seek approvals. Car club projects might be good models for the project. Three guys from my church did something a little like this. We (mostly me) restored a '68 Beetle that was donated to a charity where I volunteered. Everything was done with volunteer labor, contributed parts and funds from the charity. We did it in a 12X24 shed in my back yard. It was my hobby for 2 years. This project would require something similar.
This is already being done by the Maverick Comet Club International, Inc. (MCCI). We publish a bi-monthly, full color newsletter. One can get a PRINTED version mailed right to their door, or they can choose an emailed version they can see on their computer. But...like any newsletter, it takes individuals wanting to submit information, and it takes individuals and money to get it all put together, then send it off to the printers to get it printed, and them mailed out.
You made some very valid and well thought out points, and this (above) is probably one of the biggest hinderances to this project: Too many cooks in the kitchen. Sure....on a small scale this could be done. But on a bigger project....you are correct.
Right. The deal I offered the charity on the VW was we'd do it if I made all the decisions in the restoration process. They agreed and honored it. Worked out just fine. I hate committee decision making. Edit: And one more rule: no schedule.
