Hey everyone! I need some help, I have a 1970 ford Maverick i have the original inline 6cyl 3.3L engine. Here is what i have done to it.

    1) pertronix Pointless ignition system with flame thrower coil.
    2) rebuilt the upper-end with new comp cam
    3) reman carb

    Here is the problem.
when driving it it likes back fire into the engine compartment aka (air filter)
it does some to be running some what rich, have adjusted the carb choke and found a happy medium where the car will run in cold and or hot weather.

The car idles at about 7-10 mph. I have looked into the possabilty that not all the cylinders are not firing and they all have spark and all seam to be working the spark plugs all have a nice dark gray / black color to them no white color on the ends.

Can any one point me in a direction on fixing why i just dont have much power and it back fires all the time.

    Thank you so much!

when i use a timing light on it and put the timing where it should be the car hardly runs. I made sure the timing chain marks are on and everything is where is should be everything matches up to what the engine and book say they should be. So what i did is timed it by ear and it is close.

Yes the heat riser tube is connected, I will upload a video and show you what the choke looks like before and after it runs.

If you have the timing set at the stock specs, advance it about 6 more degrees. If the sixes are anything like the V8's, they'll run 100% better with the timing advanced over the stock specs.

Are you checking the timing with the vacuum advance hooked up?
