So it was actually like 80F today and I was pretty sure I had solved my overcharging problem finally. Driving home from work the car backfired, the engine died, and then smoke came pouring out from the general battery area.

So yea that sucked. I'll try and get some pictures up once I'm done being mad. Luckily I only had to push it about a 1/4 mile downhill.

Anyway this is what I get for dropping in gosh dang Auto Zone parts. I put in a dang duralast reman alternator and a voltage regulator about a month and a half ago to get me through till I could get the new 3G I want (fits our cars like a stock alt) and something failed. So now I got to hope the warranty on my Optima Red Top covers this.

In the brief look I took there were definetely some melted wires. So I've got a 72 6 cylinder parts car that's got a really solid engine bay. Does any of the wiring cross over? Like fusible links, or anything at all. Could I rob its voltage regulator? I know it was good and I really don't trust the auto zone ones now. I'm stuck with the alt until next payday then I'm gonna order my 3G.

    God that went long sorry.

    TL/DR

Can I rob any of the charging system wiring from my 72 200 6 for my 74 302.

I just put a 3g on my 6 popper, you hook the green with red tracer from the voltage regulator to the matching wire from the regulator harness on the alt, and run the heavy charge wire to the battery side of the selonoid

I have one vry similiar. I got it frm another source. I really like it; it has one wire that goes to the battery side of the solenoid. Had it two years, my volt meter stays @14v no matter how many accessories or the load placed on it. I have ac/elec fan/sub amp, even w/ them all going at nite ... no issues 14v.

Yea I just need to get the car running again on the current alternator so I can keep making the money to pay for the new one. Guess I'll know more tomorrow when I start trying to get it fixed.

Make sure you neutralize the acid remaining from the exploded battery. Baking soda works well.

Didn't notice any Acid leaking, But I need to check again. Battery integrity seemed solid really just smoked the terminals. and melted wires.

Wahoo. Got out today and looked at it better in the light. Battery tray collapsed (freaking rust) and the battery fell into a support that caused the 2 side terminals to touch each other and short out the battery. My heavy duty 1/4" ground strap snapped from the charge and it melted the 10ga ground wire going from my alt to the same bolt as my frame ground.

    So thats awesome.
