Judging by the destruction the Oklahoma City area experienced earlier this week, residents are going to need a lot of help in coming months. Fortunately, a number of automakers - including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Honda and Toyota - have stepped up to donate money, supplies and vehicles to aid in the recovery and rebuilding processes.

Here's a quick rundown of which automakers have pitched in and what each contributed so far:

Ford Motor Company has donating $250,000 and a Transit Connect to the American Red Cross, and it will match all other donations made to the Red Cross (up to $250,000) using a special URL tied to the latter's website (link here). Additionally, its local Oklahoma dealers have thrown in an extra $150,000 for the United Way and the automaker will be offering an extra $500 toward the purchase of a new Ford vehicle.

GM has given $50,000 and a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado to a Detroit-area charity called Forgotten Harvest, which has set up a campaign called "Help 4 Oklahoma" to bring food, medical and hygiene products to the area.

Chrysler is donating $100,000 to First Response Team of America - a nonprofit that assists first responders and helps with disaster cleanup.

Toyota has announced that it is donating $250,000 to restore food service to the area, small businesses revitalization and home rebuilding, and in addition to this amount, it will also be matching employee contributions.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Honda is donating generators to the Red Cross - a big advantage of having a power equipment division.

Volkswagen says it made a $250,000 donation to the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity, but it isn't clear if that was a combined donation or that much was given to each organization. VW is also matching the funds of its employees.

Good Morning Ladies and Gents,

My name is Nixon, and the new owner of a 1974 Mercury Comet 4 Door. I bought the car for $800 and was happy it had a good manual tranny, brakes and a strong 3.3l engine.

My grandfather and my uncle were wrench monkeys their whole lives and american motor enthusiasts. I spent most of my childhood riding around with them in old lincoln towncars, broncos, gand marquis station wagons, and monte carlos. I was too busy reading comics to catch the finer points of automechanics from them but the nostalgia and love I have for them both has drew me to this car. After 3 days of nonstop reaserch and obsession I am looking forward to loving this car for years.

I have owned Hondas up til now and still ride on a 84 Honda Magna, but the feeling of owning this old american automobile is remarkable. Even with the rust damage I get stopped daily for people to ask me about the car. I know you all can more then relate.

I have 0 experience with auto work, and even less with body work. I have major rust spots near the rear right quarter panel and around the wheel well where it has almost rusted through. Some cosmetic rust around the base of the driver and passenger doors and the hood is rusted near the latch. The most worrisome to me is I have some rust along the engine bay.

So far I had it tuned it up (new spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, wires, air filter, etc). The ball joints are weak in the upper control arm assembly and are causing uneven wear on the tires so they are being replaced this weekend. My biggest concern is the rust...

I am still EXTREMELY excited to own Haylee (the name of my comet) and I will post pics soon.

If you all have any advice for me as a first time historic car owner, and as a novice looking to acquire tools and resources to repair the car myself I would be SUPREMELY thankful.:anyone:

I am excited to join the forum as it is the first one I've ever posted in, and very happy to the maverick/comet community. Hope to meet up with some of you guys soon.

We have for sale a 1970 Mercury Cyclone "Project Car" . It is a true spoiler model that came with the C code 429 cobra jet W/ four speed. There is no motor, trans, or rear end, deck spoiler. The body it self may need work, but is not a complete rust bucket project. It still has the clutch pedals, Dash, speed o, tach, radio

Might be good for vins or if you want to have a real cobra jet car??

I still have all the drive train and some other parts. (No carb or air cleaner) Everything is original to the car but the short block. asking $8500.00 for all

I have had the car for many years and it was stored inside waiting for time to restore. Listed the car a few times with all the drive train, but did not make a sale, so we pulled the motor , trans, rear end.

The car was factory Grabber Blue, white interior, 429 cobra jet motor, four speed, 9inch 31sp trac lok, power steering, power brakes. Have Marti report in hand. We have misplaced the title that was not in our name, but have the bill of sale from the same person. All we will give is a bill of sale to the person who purchases along with the other bill of sale.

I might consider possible trades, tools, bang bang/ammo, dirt bike, 65 mustang project, car trailer, food service items, ??? What do you have of value that is smaller than this car??

I know the trans is in the correct spot because removed the original from car to install the new one. the fit and finish are not what would I would expect for a $99 part. I will post a picture of the piece in my gallery. any help on getting this to work? I dont want to modify it and then not be able to return it.

Hi All,

I'm building a new 9" center section and have mixed inputs on how to set the clutch preload. I don't have the Ford tool that's used to measure for shims (but I do have the dimensions needed to make it). Even then, the Ford book says 45# break away torque. I bought the parts from Quick Performance and they're telling me they build them to 250# break away torque. I've had this thing together and apart about 15 times now trying to get a happy medium. As far as I'm concerned, the tighter the better, but I don't want any breakage. Any input? No hurry, I'll be out of commission for a while with a torn rotator cuff...

TIA!

Ford began manufacturing cars in Australia in 1925 with the Model T. In 2016, Ford will stop manufacturing cars Down Under, including the Falcon and the Territory SUV, as Ford Australia CEO Bob Graziano has reportedly confirmed the closure of the Broadmeadows assembly plant and the Geelong engine plant, both in the state of Victoria. There will be 650 jobs lost at Broadmeadows, 510 sacrificed at Geelong. Of the roughly 3,000 workers The Blue Oval has in Australia, it's said it will try to retain about 1,000 of them at its R&D and product development facilities.

The writing hasn't just been on the wall, it's been a regular item in all the papers and on Ford's bottom line for years. As recently as 2003, Ford sold nearly 75,000 Falcons, but over the next four years annual sales dropped by something like 10,000 units, and the last two years, it has sold less than 20,000 per year. It isn't only Ford that has suffered - sales of the other large, locally produced sedan, the Holden Commodore, have also gone over the precipice, triggering the same kind of angst about Holden's continued existence. Ford is the smallest of Australia's local automakers, Holden and Toyota the others, and has posted losses of $AUD141 million last year ($136M US) and $AUD600 million ($580M US) in the past five years. Graziano said the cost of manufacturing is simply too expensive in the country, twice as high as Europe and three times as high as Asia, and there no way to make a business case for staying in the country.

In January 2012, Ford Australia announced it would stay in the country until at least 2016, but by July of the same year, most outside observers were quietly declaring that 2016 would be the last year of Ford Down Under, and even the speculation was making other observers nervous. Ford received money from the Victorian government last year to aid its refresh of the Falcon and Territory, which will continue on schedule for the 2014 model year. An front- and all-wheel-drive sedan on a global platform is predicted to replace the Falcon, with some other SUV expected to replace the Territory. The company says it still intends to expand its lineup in the country.

As for what will replace the employment hole at the factories and the supplier base, no one is quite sure. Ford has said that the employees will receive their entitlements, and workers do have three years to prepare for what's coming. As well, the state and national governments have already committed tens of millions to a fund to assist the employees.Ford to cease Australian automaking operations after 90 years originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 May 2013 08:01:00 EST.

OK, first off, Car-nut offered me a set of shorty headers for the cost of shipping (Thanks a bunch :Handshake). We were not sure what brand they were or how well they would fit.

I stuck them on, and they fit, and cleared everything, but I was concerned with how much of an angle I was going to have to route my steering shaft to get around them.

So I took a gamble and bought Hedman 88400 shorty headers, and got them today.

I was totally amazed at 1) how close they fit to the block, and 2) how much clearance I had around the steering shaft area. I can actually now SEE the steering coupler, where the other shorties, I could not, and was going to have to work blindly to connect them around the headers. Car-nut's headers pretty much just dropped straight down from the flange, where the Hedmans curve inward and under the block a bit. So I may have to come out away from the transmission at a fairly aggressive angle, but not enough to restrict airflow.

Also, someone on here a while back recommended header bolts that have a 5/16" head, and they work AWESOME! I could get the box end of the wrench on each one without ANY interference. I put both headers on in the space of 5 minutes.

The Hedmans came with gaskets and reducers, and the only issue I have is that they reduce down to 2", so I will have to buy 2-1/2" reducers before I hook everything up.

Check out all that freed up real estate!
