I decided to take the maverick to the track. I put a cheater kit on it over the winter. Anyway the car ran a best of 8.44 on motor last year and usually ran 8.50-8.80. I made three motor passes and the best was a 8.63 at 79. I then realize a need a balancer with timing tape bc I can't seem to set the timing with the light. Anyway I decided to spray a 53n jet and the car blew through the converter bad. I shift at 5500 and it only drops to 5k between shifts. Anyway this was the result
Not what anyone would call bad.. but seems like something's off. Once you get the timing figured out.. you might think about fooling around with tire size to see what the best trend is. What's the ignition curve look like? Is the disty locked out?
the car has a msd box and locked out msd distributor, I really have no clue on how much timing was in it since it has the wrong pointer on it. I have a new balancer and adjustable pointer ordered. The car was dead hooking on 26x10 slicks
It sounds like J that you don`t have enough cam & rear end gear.To go fast you need to get that mtr revving between 6500 & 7000rpm.
The engine has 68 model 302 heads and supposedly a lemans camshaft. Its basically a junk engine. There is no way this thing will go to 6500-7k. I tried shifting it at 5800 before and it dropped off about a tenth. I have the new balancer and pointer on and plan to try it again this weekend. I have a fresh 351w with patriot heads that will go in the car when this one dies. Honestly my goal is to spray the car to a 6.99 pass with the junk engine
Hey J,I really don`t know what your finale plans for the car are,but if you want to have a lotta fun in the long run & save some money this is what I would do.Eventually, take the new motor & get away from the spray & build a 408.You could easily sell the bottom end 351 crank, rods,& pistons & buy the stroker kit w/ some dish pistons & keep your comp ratio down to about 11 to 1.Use a cam w/ 280 to 300 advertised duration w/ about a 600 lift ground on a 108 lobe center.Good intake & heads you are talking 550 t0 near 600hp which will be trouble free & last a long time as long as you don`t lean the carb out to much.W/ a good c/4 & 5000 stall & 4.56 gears & a 29in tall tire, you`re looking at low 10s to low 6s 1/8 mile times in a deadly consistent combination. You won`t be wrenching on it all the time once you get everything set up.If you wanted you could even use CompCams XE294 roller & you wouldn`t have to adjust your valves all the time. This combination or versions of it work,I`ve seen it in a number of cars at the strip. All windsors over 400 cubes w/ a 4in stroke make mountains of torque,& once they reach 1/3 of the way down the track they come on like gang busters & really run people down. It`s all in what you want to do,but mtrs are expensive,& power adders shorten their life span.Go big, high torque, low rpm(below 7200) & have a ton of fun without killing your wallet.
new pb on the 53n jet. I plan to try out a 63n jet next weekend. When this engine goes I have everything to put together 357w with aluminum heads in the shop right now. I like nitrous way to much to quit lol
Hey J,you could still use nitro w/ that combo,(small shot) & that would put you in the 5s 1/8& 9s 1/4,& best of all you would put lots of BOWTIES on the trailer!
The cars suspension would have to have a lot of work for that to happen. Right now it has the stock stuff from 1972 and its easy to tell when you are driving. Honestly I want to run 6.50s on spray with the new engine. My cam only ls1 Camaro went a 6.96 at 96 with 63n jet at full weight, I want to run faster than that with the junk 351w but I doubt it will happen
That's what happened to my last motor, ran the hardest it ever had breaking tires loose at 70mph. Next day I took it to the track and that was the end of that one.
