I have been trying to get my new holley 600 setup for 3 months now. I had to have the first one replaced. The carb has an electric choke. When the car starts the rpms are very very high. Which holley says is normal. I do not have a tach hooked up but it sounds like the 3k range to me. The other problem is the butterfly never opens up. The car runs fine with autolite and other holley I have. I am sure that it does not have any vacuum leaks. Is this just the electric choke not adjusted right. If so what steps should I follow. I dont have any experience with these chokes. Here is the link to what I have. Also the motor is a 302 with an edelbrock intake.

    Thanks
    Matt

Did you read page 6 and 9 in the instructions? There's some help there on setting it and connecting the voltage wire to it.

I did gene. I think the problem is with the cam. I am not sure how the screw and the cam should be set in relation to each other after adjusting the cap.

Is the throttle plate closing like it should? Is the cable long enough to let it close?

Im not sure what you are asking. My knowledge of carbs is limited. I usually use manual chokes and have never had any issues.

A choke is a choke. The electric one is the same just your not adjusting a cable..
The throttle plate is the plate that opens at the bottom of the carb.

When should I be looking for the plate to be open? Does it open with the throttle. Would that have anything to do with the high rpms?

The plate at the bottom opens as you accelerate.. There is a diaphram that shoots fuel at the same time.. You can have the engine off and look into the carb and see it open as you pull the linkage like your stepping on the gas pedal. It should open and close with ease.

A pic of the linkages could reveal something.. or maybe not..
Are you using the stock throttle cable for a v8? How is it attached to the carb?

Throttle cable and linkage move freely. Carb acts the same way with cable disconnected. Also the cable has been used with 2 previous carbs 1 autolite and another holley. This carb act the same when I tested it on my dads car also. I am coming to think this electric choke was a bad idea that im stuck with now. Like I said the butterfly never opens. So does that mean the cam and linkage or idle screw not set in the right order with the cap.

Maybe.. It will not open until it heats up. Takes a minute or two or three..
Out of the box it should all be lined up. The only thing you really would have needed to do was maybe loosen the choke cap and turn it a little..
Does the choke plate open if you put your finger in it?

I can make it stand up. it just won't do it on its own like it should.

Loosen the cap and turn it till you see the plate start to open..
