I'm having a terrible time trying to figure out where to get front springs for my car with lower rate for drag racing. Do you guys hav any recommendations? So far I've struck out with Eibach and Afco.
Hi John. The thing to keep in mind with drag style springs is that they need to be taller with higher numbers of coils to store the extra energy needed to allow more lift and better weight transfer. Unless Moroso now carries some newer part numbers that I'm not aware of?(a search of their cataloge or quick phone call should answer that question as well as give actual spec's).. those trick springs will make your car sit FAR too high since they're intended for heavier big block cars. Also not sure if things have changed from a parts availability standpoint.. but most of the old school guys running small blocks.. some are EXTREMELY quick too.. are still using the old 6'er springs since they are taller and have lower spring rates. Aside from the higher dollar setups with coil-overs or aftermarket suspensions.. this is what I still see the most on the street racing scene. And if you're overly concerned about achieving that cooler looking rake that everyone's after these days?.. you'll have to cut them to make the ride height correct. Which then results in you having lost most of the stored energy that you paid for in the first place.. especially with the Moroso's. If you want a dual purpose setup that has some height adjustment and/or makes spring swaps easier?.. I would highly suggest looking into a front coil-over conversion setup for use with stock suspension cars. Hope that helps a bit. PS. you'll need to unbolt the front sway bar for best results either way you go. Otherwise.. they bind and limit the front ends rise just like a travel limiter would. PSPS. call this guy. The V8 weighs 85-100 lbs more than a 6 cyl. Since the V8 sit farther back in the engine bay than a six cyl., the weight of a V8 car is lighter on the front axle than a six cyl. car. Six cylinder car springs wore out faster than a V8 car springs is the reason why a used spring could have less spring rate. The big bumper 6 cyl. Mavericks came with more spring rate than the small bumper Mavericks with a V8. Through some quick research I found out about the moroso springs and eliminated those. I went with 6 cylinder springs from espo. They are actually an inch shorter than the v8 springs and they told me the car should sit an inch or two lower with them. I know the sway bar removal trick. It ain't my first rodeo! LoL My sway Bar is stock and the end links are worn to ****. I'll probably remove it eventually. I also have 90/10's. The back susp is cal tracs on new springs. Regular shocks for now but adjustable shocks in the near future. Just trying to get it so I can drive it right now.
I think the 8088 springs would be the ones to go with since they are 1.5 inches shorter and may not need much if any removed to achieve your desired ride height.
i have some fox body drag springs that ive heard will fit the maverick. i suspect they will make the front sit high.
The springs are supposed to be delivered today. Not sure I will have time to install them tonight but I will post the result here when I do.
I've got the Eibach fox body springs on mine. They are the Progressive rate spring with 342 lbs/in initial and 462 lbs/in main. The are a bit smaller in diameter (about 1/2") so they don't sit in the saddles quite perfectly. I had to cut 1 coil off to make the front end sit where I wanted it. I also built a set of the roller spring perches and removed my sway bar. Made a heck of a difference in weight transfer! I have 90/10's in the front, the Calvert/Rancho 9 ways on the back with split mono's and Caltrac bars.
I run the Landrum 180lb springs, they are too tall, so I ended up cutting 3/4 of a coil off, they took about a week to settle, and they have a ton of energy, I can lift my car 6 inches or so by grabbing the radiator support.
