Decided to take the Comet out for the first time this year. I ran up to the closest Sheetz convenience store and put some 93 in it. I came back and with it all warmed up I busted off a 11.46@116. Just when I think this little Hyd cam 302 is at it limit it surprises me again. Next I'm gonna put an electric water pump on it and take it to MIR and it may just have an 11.20 in it ha ha !!
What gear you running? Front end lifts pretty good for a mid-11 second car. Not that there is anything wrong with a "mid-11 second car"...wish I had one...
That's actually an older picture with about a 1.62 60ft with 4:11s now it's a 1.55 60' with 4.62 gears .
Congrat's on the new best wish I was there. With all the cold weather this year it's hard for me to get motivated. Heading to Capitol today with some other guys leaving the car at home though. When you heading to MIR?
I got to take out our new 2014 mustang with the track pack (me and my dads car) its completely with street tires, still learning to drive it and ran a 13.22
Hey Coop, that thing will fly at MIR, I'm looking to make at least Sunday down there at the NMRA race early next month. I got me a new personal best yesterday also. Last pass with my new carb, 136.00 MPH, previous best was 135.28. I'm gonna shot for the SBRA race next SAt. at M-D. Hope you can make it.
4.62 gears seem a littlelow, don`t know what your rpms are through the traps. At some point in time you might want to try some 4.56s or even a 4.30 gear if you think the car won`t bog off the line, you would probably p/u about 5mph at the finish & get near a 10 sec. time, only losing a little on the 60ft which you might be able to overcome w/ some chassis tweaking.
I wish I could get 4:30s but having an 8" I'm limited to 4:11s & 4:62s.. sucks but ill just zing it lol. It crosses the traps @ 7,000 rpm. I shift @ 7,000 also
I wish you all the luck in the world, but that 8in is only going to last you so long. Then you can step up to a 9 & then you`ll be able to have better choices w/ gears.
Even with lots of gear.. those little 8" rears can live for many years. Plus.. this motor isn't making huge torque like a high compression stroker either and that makes all the difference in the world right there. I know of an early 4d Falcon with a 347 turbo setup that pulls wheelies on the street and he still runs the 8" that he had when the car was N/A and about 250 less ft/lbs of torque. He always laughs when people give him crap about living on barrowed time and usually say's something witty like.. "wanna go round the corner and compare my little 8" to your big 9"?" The car is gutted and VERY light though.. so there's that too.
What are the specs on your cam? And wjktb, we've got to talk. I've GT a 2012 mustang that I drag race. We can compare notes.
If you are going to make some serious power eventually that 8in WILL NOT HOLD UP.In 1975 I had a 302 in a 65 stang,dome pistons,big solid cam,headers,800 double pumper,4spd car w/ a 4.11 8in rear.Grabbed 2nd gear at 8000rpm & exploded it,pinyon gear went into the woods & we never found it.With an automatic trans they will probably last a while,but a stick,FORGET IT!
