Hello guys! I want to do a major upgrade to my 4 door 71' maverick, so I went with a friend, he suggest me to go with a EFI conversion, he told me he will make it work and I will feel the difference inmediately or stick with the carb and he will make the best job too... I've been reading about carb to efi conversion, but I'm not 100% sure of doing it, what are your recommendations? I found that Edelbrock has a EFI conversion kit but it's quite expensive.... The engine doesn't have any modification, I only have an H pipe...haha! Should I go with a brand new Edelbrock carb, new intake manifold, MSD ignition system or go with an EFI conversion? Have you done an EFI conversion to your maverick?
I would think for the money on a stock motor there will not be ...that much difference. I have had a couple of different aftermarket EFI systems on my car and couldn't get them tuned to run correctly...JMO PS...I am now looking at the ... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-2900/reviews/
If you go with a long runner intake(stock Ford SEFI configuration) you'll get a noticeable increase in low end torque and probably five more MPG... If you go with a throttle body system, on a stock engine you'll mostly have a flatter wallet, as a properly tuned carb can come close... The SEFI system from a '86-'91 Crown Vic or Grand Marquis would work but really isn't optimum, a better choice would be a cam change to the 13726548 firing order and HO system from Mustang... Better still would be a Explorer intake & throttle body on the Stang system... Then there are headers, heads, free flowing exhaust system, etc, etc...
Wow, they've dropped the price on those. A friend just installed that kit on his car, it's pretty nice.
truthfully, only EFI systems worth upgrading to from a Carb is Multipoint either bank to bank or MPFI(coilpacks)...throttle-body is just a glorified carb and to me cash spent inst worth a properly tuned carb with multipoint you'll pretty much have better throttle response and more power edelbrock carbs are mediocre carbs..afb is eh...avs is better but theirs better carbs for carb, cant beat a 625 street demon for EFI holley HP/dominator system or accel DFI
I have the MSD set up on my 72, it was test mule for it. Runs so much smoother than the 650DP - it doesn't even sound like it has a cam anymore. It ran fine with the carb, but runs better with the EFI.
Thanks for the advice guys, I think i would stay with the carburetor, they look better on old cars haha! I want to stay with the classic look. The MSD efi kit looks great but I dont want to spend all the money on that considering that I will change the differential with rear brake discs, power steering and fix some problems with the clutch. But now I will have to look the best carburetor, I've read about the 625 street demon looks great.
You can have EFI like performance and mileage simply by doing a cam swap to an efi type (wide LSA cam) and bolting on a smallish cfm carb, combined with a hot electronic ignition system. Skip the MSD crap (that'll set you back $500) and use either a Pertronix drop in or switch to a Duraspark setup. You will get everything an EFI system offers, except for compensating for drastic elevation changes. You would have to be getting piss poor mileage to start with to see a 5 mpg increase in fuel economy. The combo I've listed here will net you the same MPG as an EFI system.
They're better then a carb yes, I'm just saying for the price/work, you may as well spend a tad more for mpfi or just stick with carb/replace with better carb but if you do choice TBI kit such as Holley or accel, you can upgrade it to mpfi by switching out thottlebody and ecu harness and injector harnesses whereas some other TBI kits, your stuck with them and have to ditch for mpfi kit
