So, I'm painting the engine compartment which is now stripped to bare metal. I was thinking of using several coats of truck bed coating and then painting it with a couple coats of light-gray colored paint. I want the engine bay a bit brighter for working under the hood and the car's getting painted Bright Silver Metallic, so, everything will, kind of, match. I don't, really, care about nicks/scratches or oil stains. This is gonna be a daily driver, not a show-car and I work on it regularly. I was looking at Lizard Skin as an option, but, the stuff isn't readily available at the local parts store. I have to order it or drive to one of the speed shops in town that carry it. I want something that I can repair/re-do quickly and easily when needed. Anyone have any suggestions for a sound-deadening, durable coating that is available at the local parts store? It doesn't have to work spectacularly, just better than plain-Jane paint. Or, am I on the right track with the painted bed liner? Thanks guys, Eric
Are there any rubberized paints available that help with sound and insulation? Kind of looking for an all-in-one deal. Is it just the textured finish that makes it look bad? Eric
Maybe use of a flex agent ,that will make paint thick, and it will take longer to dry, as in fiberglass paint that needs to flex. Then, Urathane or Epoxy is also high build. Sumitt auto parts paint has a thick look to it. Ask your local auto paint rep,you dont have to be a bodyman for answers.
I agree that the use of bed liner will look terrible. If you want sound deadening, I'm assuming you're talking about on the firewall and that goes on the inside of the car as in insulation, dynamat, etc.
Sound deadening goes on the inside of the firewall, not in the engine compartment. There was a car in MM&f's a couple months ago, they did the engine compartment in bed liner, it looked like crap.
Well, I want something for the whole engine bay. I'm, already, gonna use Dynamat on the interior. I have the new formula of the Dupicolor bed-liner and it sprays very thin and uniform. Tried it on a test piece. The texture is very fine and looks good. The only thing I'm worried about is the engine bay heat affecting the coating, especially, where the headers dive under. I've read in some places that the urethane-based bed liners can "melt" and look like tar with extreme temperatures. Others say they've had good results. Hoping I get some other options, here. Eric
Paint Just paint it, bedliner and Lizard skin will melt and make a mess. I used black engine paint on my comet, looks good 2 years later.
My car came with undercoating in the engine bay and it was a pain to remove. I think it looks better just painted.
Chemicals would not do anything, I ended up using a wire wheel on a angle grinder. It took a while and a few wheels but it turned out nice.
Nice job. That finished photo looks awesome. I was asking how you did it because my car should have a halo top and someone sprayed bedliner on it instead, so I will have to do the same thing. It looks like it will be a much easier job than you had though.
if you would like some kind of coating check this out http://store.secondskinaudio.com/firewall-liquid-thermal-barrier/ otherwise just take bedliner off, prep it well and primer/paint it
The rougher surface of anything but paint will be much harder to clean and keep looking good. Paint it. SPark
