Has anyone ever put a glide in a maverick. I know I will need an ultrabell, flexplate, converter and driveshaft. Just looking for any tips when my c4 goes out
TCI makes a midplate that has SBF on one side and SBC on the other. We ran them in stock cars years ago to put a glide behind a 351W. SPark
Ok, Frank's trans member comes really close to fitting, a little modification and should work fine..............at least in my installation. When the powerslide went in the stock trans crossmember was mod'd, then I re-did it again late last year to hold the HP/TQ without me worrying. I use a Reid bellhousing on a cast case Glide, I'd not a believer in the OE aluminum cases, if I had the money I'd spring for a Reid line case because it doesn't need to re-SFI'd every 3/5 years, but $1k is a little pricey for me. It depends on where the motor is situated as to the bellhousing hitting anything, when my 351w is in the car I have a good 6" from the bellhousing mounting surface to the firewall. Other than that you just need to watch your headers (if you have them) as the collectors come pretty close the trans pan, and as for a shifter I use a B&M Pro, but then my car is race only. Yes, you will need a new drive shaft or modify yours............not sure what rearend you have but the yoke is different and I doubt the length will work. Just maintain spec's on the universal angles and you should be fine. Also, you will probably have to modify your parking brake, but just moving the rear bracket is no big deal.
Go look at bb466s car,it has a c4 turning 9s w/ a 408 in it.I just don`t think you will gain a whole lot by going to a glide,plus all the hassle of putting it in.Also,they are now being built to hold 1200hp & w/ the right parts it does`nt take much hp to pull them.
What Dan said is correct, if I had to go another route (using and automatic instead of 4/5/6spd) I'd use a C4. These are the plus's to using a Powerglide, Fairly compact and lightweight (not as much as a C4 although) They are simple to work on and have a low rotating mass Because of only 2 gears they make very consistent and repeatable 1/4 mile times. There is a not one piece in this transmission that can't be upgraded to make it capable of handling 2000+hp............
how much HP do you make? the money you will spend on a glide can be spent on a high hp c4. plenty of full bodied stock and super stock cars making up to 1000hp are running c4s PA (performance automatics) makes bulletproof c4. one thing about a glide, unless you go with a high dollar gear set, its gonna leave like a slush box. guys who build 500 plus cubic inch drag motors in cars put glides in to kill the "hit" wich means 1 to 2 tenth loss in 60ft times. As Duane mentioned, building the Powerglide certainly isn't cheap but mine was originally built by http://mikestransmission.com/ and lasted almost 11 years without a refresh behind the 408 racing 1/8 and 1/4 runs. When it was pulled apart by Mike it was on the verge of becoming a large hand grenade, but it's been updated extensively and the converter was loosened just a little to see if we can't get from a 1.4 60' to a 1.3 or even a 1.2 with a change to the header collector. Although my motor is a 408, when it's on the trans brake at 5000 and you release it............it hits really hard. Of course the motor is small compared to yours and I'm only at 544lbft of tq, but it certainly isn't a slush box, even when it was pretty much worn out. If that's what you've got to work with then give it a try............IMHO
OK I didn't have very good luck with my PA tranny. Only lasted about a year and a half. I now have a dynamics racing X-6 C-4. Love it. Been running it at the track for about 3 years now. 6-pinion fully rollerised front planetary and a modified C-6 Vasco shaft. A lot of precision machine work is carried out. The pump is rebored and bushed, the forward drum is bored out and resplined, and the special input to output system utilizes Teflon to give previously unavailable lateral support. Also highly recommend the option of the 2.20 first gear! In my opinion the strongest C-4 money can buy.
Which PA trans were you using? I've been thinking about their Super Comp C-4 instead of a PG. You're the first person I've heard who didn't like them. Don't take that the wrong way lol...just saying that everyone else I've talked to has had good luck with them. Just wondering which trans you had, and what the issues were. I was sure there were probably issues with them as well...just hadn't heard any.
No offense taken Maxx! Mine is a PA26103. Probably had about a year and a half on it and it went out. No drama just pulled up to the tree, staged, released the trans brake and didn't go anywhere. Wouldn't go forward or backward at that point. I bought a rebuild kit for it just have done it yet. It will eventually go in another one of my mavs.
Cool. I was thinking about the PA26107, the Super Comp line. They claim it's good up to 1000 HP. Should hold up in my little heap forever lol.
Quick question for you guys who have put a PG in...how does the factory mount line up height wise? Does the mounting point on the crossmember fall on the same mounting plane on both transmissions? I realize there is probably fore or aft movement that has to be made...just wondering whether a stock crossmember can be modified...or whether a whole new mount has to be fabricated.
I`m pretty sure the pg is a much shorter trans,which means you would have to fab your cross member.Just send Olerodder a personal message & he can tell you what to do,he has one in his car.
