Thought I would start a thread of my Mav that is in for paint and body and post up some progress pics. A lot more rust and corrosion than anticipated but all fixable. Some of these issues have already had new metal welded in and looks awesome. :thumbs2:

Looks good, it's a lot of work, but the only way to fix it properly.

Ouch! Makes me hope mine is as solid as I think it is once the paint comes off.

Is this the same car in your avatar, Gene?

just a word of advice.......replace the entire bottom of those panels. Merely cutting out the obvious rust holes wont stop it. As soon as you are finished, the panels will pop a rust spot on the edge of the repaired area. Dont mean to be doom and gloom, here, but being a body guy for over 30 years, does have its advantages.

I have the same problem on my maverick. Your saying just get new quarters, cutting quarters are out of my level about how much would it be to get someone to cut it out and replace both quarters?

New quarters are the way to go, IF you can afford it, same with fenders, all tho most body guys can form a new replacement panel for the bottoms of those fenders and quarters. I myself just replaced the entire bottom edge of my right door, because when I stripped the paint there were a few spots that were about to blast out, better to fix the problem NOW, rather than re-do the repair in six months. A simple and cheap fix for the wheel arches on the quarters is to use the wheel arch from a fender. And the price depends an your location, the amount of work, and so on. Could end up being a few hundred for each panel, which isnt really that bad if its done correctly. Shop around, maybe there is a guy on here in your area that can help you out.

What he said. (y) 20 years bodyshop myself, rust is always bigger than what you see from the outside. It's easier to do more now, than redo it later. And when you are done, make sure to treat the backside of the what you repair, if you can get at it easy enough. I used a UPOL gun multi-directional wand, with por15 in it(I did this before refinishing). A good epoxy primer would be a way to go also.

Actually the passenger rear qtr is being replaced with a new one. It's hard to tell from the pics but it had been hit and repaired terribly...there was an inch thick layer of bondo from the wing window all the way down to the wheel well...and the metal is all rippled and messed up. Driver side is fixable.

Is the car originally from Arizona? Looks like a snow belt car from around here.

Looks like you're into a lot of work, but I've seen A LOT worse! Good to see that you are cutting out all the rust and welding in new metal--it's the only way to go. Looking forward to progress updates!!

No not from Arizona. This car was purchased new in South Carolina and was in Ohio when I purchased it.

    That explains the rust.
