So my water pump gasket have out on me, I was trying to replace it and I broke off 2 bolts, a piece of the timing cover and the water pump still won't come off, so now I need to replace both...ugh this car, now my question is are the timing cover and water pump on a 74 ford maverick 302 the same as the 87 mustang? Because all the parts look identical I have the drivers side outlet, the passenger side ac outlet and a passenger side outlet that goes to the thermostat this car is one headache after the other, and the water pump is original so everything is stuck. I'm in desperate need of help here
they are different. the 87 mustang pump is reverse rotation and the cover is for reverse rotation and doesnt have a dip stick hole in it.
breaking bolts removing an original water pump is common...the ones that go through the water jacket rust almost halfway through... note...coat the new bolts with... http://www.rustbullet.com/ ...before installing them.
Im pretty sure the parts stores (autozone, advance...) can get them but make sure you get the one to match your water pump/belt system and not the car
Just curious, what piece of the cover is broken off? Could you post a pic of it. I had a piece break out of the side where one of the long bolts goes through. It didn't allow coolant or oil to escape, so we reused it. The bolt had rusted inside of the cover and when it turned the outside of the cover split and a ½" section broke off.
Just FYI: I use ordinary everyday Teflon thread paste on those bolts to stop the seepage from the threads. Antiseize on the bolt shanks of any bolt that passes through and aluminum part. I have heard that the timing covers are the same, I think they're different in the layout of these two covers, set em side by side and verify this before buying a timing cover.
