I just bought a cylinder head for my maverick and had it shipped here and noticed a metal cap is missing. I'm not sure what the metal cap is called but here is a picture of it circled in red. Can anyone tell me the name of this metal cap?
It's called a freeze plug. NAPA should be able to get you one in the correct size. I would call the place where you got the head and tell them you need one.
alright. If I found one the right size is that something I could install myself or would I have to bring it to a shop to get it done?
You can 100% install them yourself, it's as easy as making sure there's nothing in the hole and that it's clean, apply a little loctite to the plug, then driving it in with a socket the size of the plug. (hitting the socket with a mallet) they make special tools to drive them in too but for one I doubt you would want to buy it If you do, just ask if they have a seal driver in the right size.
thanks There is already some semi clear stuff in the hole. It looks like they got it ready and then forgot to install it lol. kinda annoying when I just bought it brand new.
I got mine from amazon for $331 but I get $75 back when I ship them my old one back. So after I ship my old one back it only cost me $256.
That seems like a really good price. I think shipping would be quite high....eating up the $75 you are getting back.
I would use IndianHead in the little brown bottle, best stuff ever for freeze plugs. It`s what most machine shops use when installing them.
make sure you some kind of sealer on the plug . that plug is in your intake manifold if its not tight you will have a vacuum leak
Rock Auto $245.79 + $60 core. Oriley's Auto Parts $319.99 + $60 core Advance Auto $276.99 + $60 core. Autozone $276.99 + $60 core There are some others. I was pricing them too. Wound up taking it to a shop. It will cost me about the same. But some one local to get help from down the road seemed better to me.
