The welds inside the filler neck that hold this tube together broke off and it fell inside my tank. Luckily I was able to get it out. I am using a sparco fuel cap now and I wont be using the maverick filler neck anymore. So I was wondering what this tube is for and if I need to somehow make it fit on my new filler neck that im having an exhaust shop make for me. Is it an anti syphon tube or is it a breather for the gas tank? I don't want to have fuel spilling when I'm pumping gas.
It's to allow air to escape while you're filling up. Without it, fuel sloshes back up the neck, shutting off the pump or spilling fuel
Yep, you gotta be careful when fueling these cars. It helps to not have the filler nozzle in all the way, and don't squeeze the lever all the way.
What year tank is that? I dropped the tank in my car to take the breather tube out and my tank looks exactly like that one
I didn't have a problem pumping before, but since I bought the Sparco fuel cap, I have to use the filler neck that came with the cap. I cant use my maverick filler neck. I thought it was going to be easy to get it to work, but I was wrong. When I first installed the cap I did it the cheape$t way possible.I had my buddy Matt at a local exhaust shop bend me a new 2" filler tube made out of exhaust pipe to connect to the sparco filler neck. So he bent me a pipe and we connected it to the filler neck with a fuel rubber hose and clamped it down. So I went to test it out at the gas station and all of the gas spilled right back out even if I went slow. So I went back to matt and told him my issue and we looked at the sparco filler neck and realized that we needed to add a bend that pointed downwards towards the gas tank because the way it was installed it was pointing straight out so the gas didn't have an angle to flow down to the tank so it was accumulating and spilling right back out. Since the sparco filler neck is made out of aluminum he's been working on it on his free time, since I don't know how to tig weld otherwise I'd be doing it myself. So he ended up cutting the filler neck at a 90 degree angle and flipped it around and welded it. By doing so he added a 90 degree bend shooting down towards the gas tank. Hes supposed to bend me up a new tube for the tank this week so I installed my gas cap with the the new 90 degree fuel neck, so I could see if a fuel nozzle fit in there. For some reason I knew the fuel nozzle was not going to have enough clearance and I was right. I cant stick the fuel nozzle in all the way so it doesn't sit flush with the cap. The tip of the nozzle hits the top of the neck where it bends down. Also with that bend I can only put the nozzle in one way and that's aiming it straight down. My teacher told me that maybe I can pull the nozzle neck back and just shoot it straight down and pump gas slowly that way. Im not sure what im going to do, this gas cap has been a pain in the ass. Here's pictures of the way it was before before my friend added the 90 degree to the filler neck. As you can see it shoots straight out and doesn't aim downwards causing the fuel to spill right back out.
