I've been gone for too long... next week I return home from overseas(Army) and I'm pulling the Mav out of the garage. Its been well over a year since I last drove him. BUT thats all about to change!! I still have him started every week since I left to keep everything lubed & sealed properly. My grandfather lets him idle for at least 20 mins. then drives circles around the drive way to rotate the tires. cant afford to just let him sit. some of you may recall how I acquired such a maverick. So I'll start at the beginning...
    IMAG0117.jpg IMAG0145.jpg 374260_324124470938075_2116841042_n-1.jpg 167967_191042957579561_4001840_n.jpg

He was my fathers first car he bought in 84 when he was 16. the maverick went through 3 restorations in that time. and was about to under go his fourth when my father "Donnie" passed away Nov 2010 unexpectedly, I was 19. he left his legacy "sharkey" to me because I was the only one who truly shared his love for the car. and I set out to finish what he started. but like he always told me there is always something to upgrade, customize, and change. he said the car will never be finished until he is in the ground... finished for him that is. I couldn't of asked for a better father. he has taught me everything I know about auto repair since I could walk. I just wish I didn't lose my teacher/mentor at such a young age. I have put a lot of work in this car since he passed. bodywork/paint/hood/trans/wiring etc..I do all the work on this car myself (except for paint&bodywork lol) no1 else touches my car. that's how my dad was.. I'm about $9000 into him myself. but you cant really tell. 80% of the work was done by the master. I never met someone so knowledgeable with mavericks like my father. he knew every screw and wire on that entire car. at one point in time we had up to 14 mavericks. 2drs,4drs, runners, projects, and parts cars. none ever came close to his pride and joy though.

    No more Hiatus!!!
Now I am back in action! I return home from overseas in 9 days! fueled with piss & vinegar. A little older and a lot more mature. I am 23 now and I'm currently a machinist/welder in the army. and my car has been ignored for too long!

So I will be continuing to use this thread to post updates on the car as I have alot more plans for him in his near future. I will be updating frequently with photos of any project I do.

the first return home project will be pulling the original tank & adding a fuel cell.

    PROJECT #1
I'm taking out my '70 gas tank (modified for efi) cutting out a piece of metal to lay down inside and cover the hole where the tank sits and mounting a 20gal aluminum fuel cell above it.

this is the fuel cell I decided on.
    DMC proformance
    20 Gallon Fuel Cell Tank Polished Aluminum 24"(L) x 20"(W) x 10"(H)
includes :slosh foam, 2inch rear sump, and sending unit.
    $_57 (1).JPG $_57.JPG

My current 1970 gas tank has been modified for efi with an in-tank pump. but having a slosh issue when taking left turns(kills the car) because of the way it was done by not adding a baffle.

Idc to modify the tank any further which is why I went with a fuel cell swap besides for racing purposes. this car can still be a daily driver as it always has been. but I want him to be strip worthy on the weekends.

*** the issue I am running into is deciding on a external electric fuel pump to mount below the cell. I'm planning on using the existing regulator if possible and running braided fuel lines. this is the only pump so far that I feel like would be a good choice. (open to suggestions please)

Any advise or pics of other fuel cell swaps will not be ignored=)

:Welcome: back, and I wish you all the best in completing the car to honor your father. I too, lost my father, but my current Maverick project serves as a constant reminder of growing up, working on my first Maverick and other Fords, and learning about them from him.

    Safe travels home!!

    Ditto...

Great car, the 5.0 EFI conversion makes me wish I'd gone ahead and did mine while it was apart, especially since I have most of the parts anyway...

I remember that car, I was really impressed with the heart and soul that obviously went into it.

Sorry about your dad, I lost my dad that same year and he was my mentor as well.

Best wishes getting back to it!

And Thank You for your service :tiphat:

welcome back, and thank you for serving.

the bosh 44 fuel pump is very popular for efi conversions and is a reasonable price on amazon

i also just notices looking at that page some walbro pumps that have complete installation kits for an even better price.
ive never had any problems with bosch or walbro pumps.

Have a walbro 255lph on my car run by itself, seems to work pretty good. Mine is an external pump, but they do make in tank models.

While I was with Mercury Marine, we used Walbro pumps in many outboard and sterndrive applications. They were very reliable provided that owners purged them of Ethanol fuel blends prior to storage of the engine.
